Music Review: The 9th Installment Holds It's Own!

When I think about Atmosphere's "Sad Clown Bad Dub" series, I can't help but get a lukewarm feeling from them. Each EP usually has a couple of dope tunes, and the rest are easily forgettable. "Sad Clown Bad Summer #9" is the first installment out of a 4-season series of EP releases from underground favorites Slug & Ant.
To my astonishment, all 5 tracks on this EP are solid. Some better than others, but I've been able to listen to this EP 10+ times, which usually isn't the case with EP's at all. "Sunshine" is a local/radio favorite here in Minneapolis, featuring Musab (aka Beyond) on additional vocals. My favorite goes to "The Number One" though. The beat, the hook, the warm lyrics - it's all here in stellar beauty. "RFTC" picks up the pace a bit as Ant tears through yet another infectious and memorable beat. "Mattress" & "Don't Forget" are probably my least favorite here. They are great tunes with great beats, but lack ever so slightly in the infectiousness of the 3 previous tunes.
Overall, I would recommend adding this to your library if you're looking for some quality Atmosphere to tide you over in between full-length releases. And although it's not usually the case, this nice little EP is just as rewarding as their full records.
