Music Review: Furious Genius

After writing a review of the new Nine Inch Nails album, "Year Zero," I later felt like putting an addendum after the last line heralding ATR's "Burn, Berlin, Burn!" as the type of album Reznor aspired to make, but fell way short of achieving. And it wouldn't be too surprising, since NIN did tour with the now-defunct ATR years ago. I found "Berlin" in a used-CD store for $7, and even though the clear case was tainted yellow from something and a nauseating cigarette-stink was imbedded in the sleeve, I'll be damned if this isn't one of the best albums sitting on my shelf. Even though ATR herald from the titular locale, their sonic/lyrical fury carries over just as well to the American political situation today in a manner more bruising and innovative than "Zero" (pretty ironic, since "Berlin" was first released a decade ago); maybe the issue is really Reznor's watered-down pop sensibility ultimately rendering his lyrical/musical protest music limp-wristed at best. There is no sentiment on "Berlin," just one furious pummeling after another (after 14 tracks, you might feel winded), as ATR mixes thudding, beat-driven techno, frantic guitars, heavy vocal distortion, well-placed samples, and up to 3 different vocalists (Alec Empire, Hanin Elias, and Carl Crack) belting out lyrics with such visceral anger they make the punk bands of the early '80s sound absolutely quaint by comparison. "Berlin" is an extremely cool, genre-blending album, turning the notion of protest into something worth screaming AND dancing about. Standout tracks: 'Destroy 2000 Years of Culture,' 'Speed,' 'Death Star,' 'The Future of War.'

Originally licensed by the Beastie Boys for the now defunct Grand Royal label, Burn, Berlin, Burn (originally released in 1977) raised the bar for electronic music upon its release. This 2003 reissue is remastered. Digital Hardcore Recordings.ATR is one of those bands that look great on paper: youth fighting the system, a band blending old-school punk with samplers and break beats, a musical revolution. Unfortunately, Burn, Berlin, Burn! is mere cathartic venting, not a full frontal assault on government, press, and social ills. Musically, they dish out a mix of recycled punk and bad jungle--not even much for ear candy. It's a shame because they are the type of band you really want to take seriously, but so are the reunited Sex Pistols as they scream about EMI 20 years later. A good idea taken to an unoriginal conclusion. --Bill Snyder
