Music Review: A great album just a bit too early.

The team of Alec Empire, Hanin Elias and Carl Crack was sure an intense one. The legendary trio Atari Teenage Riot was famously known for having shows broken up by the police for well, rioting. It doesn't take long for one to listen to this mixture of punk/jungle/hiphop/industrial and noise that was termed digital hardcore to know if this is a band for you or not. In terms of being able to listen to "hard" music, this separates the wimps from the real thing, and that's exactly what ATR was, the real in your face thing.
Almost every track pounds with beats that are like boots marching toward a revolution. Hard, fast music, angry political and social justice messages, are all sadly wasted on the year they made the album. In the year i'm writing this of 2007, it's easy to imagine they could of became bigger as a different type of protest band then ever seen before. But at the pennies that you can find it now on amazon, its no reason not to get the disc. ATR's music hits that cross section of expermentalism, energy, punk ideology, and believe it or not very catchy anthems in all the harshness. Even more remarkable is that the genre they invented never gained more of a following(admitedly by its nature it is not very radio friendly), but digital hardcore today is only followed by a handful of loyal adherents, perhaps waiting for its time to strike.
But until then, buy this disc and feel the power of a little piece of musical history that could of been.
Description of Burn, Berlin, Burn
Originally licensed by the Beastie Boys for the now defunct Grand Royal label, Burn, Berlin, Burn (originally released in 1977) raised the bar for electronic music upon its release. This 2003 reissue is remastered. Digital Hardcore Recordings.ATR is one of those bands that look great on paper: youth fighting the system, a band blending old-school punk with samplers and break beats, a musical revolution. Unfortunately, Burn, Berlin, Burn! is mere cathartic venting, not a full frontal assault on government, press, and social ills. Musically, they dish out a mix of recycled punk and bad jungle--not even much for ear candy. It's a shame because they are the type of band you really want to take seriously, but so are the reunited Sex Pistols as they scream about EMI 20 years later. A good idea taken to an unoriginal conclusion. --Bill Snyder
