Music Reviews of Assassins (1991 Original Off-Broadway Cast)Music Review: Sondheim's brilliance on display Rating: 5 Stars
Probably his least well known score is one of his best. ASSASSINS combines multiple styles to form a tableau of some of the most horrible times in our countries history. His score is fantastic, as is the book, evident from the track that is mainly dialogue(incidentaly one of my favorite on the CD) Victor Garber is fantastic, as is Terrence Mann. Songs to put on repeat:'The Ballad of Booth', The Ballad of Csolgoz', 'How I Saved Roosevelt', the dialogue track, and my favorite, 'Unworthy of Your Love'. Only Sondheim could write a beautiful love song sung by two insane people one who loves Jodie Foster, and one who loves Charles Manson.SONDHEIM IS BRILLIANT!
Music Review: i wish i could give it more stars! Rating: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorite musicals, used to be my 1st, but that's been replaced by another fantastic musicals, Titanic. But that's another matter in itself. I love it! The only complaint I have about this recording is that you have to listen through the entire "Gun Song" to get to "The Ballad of Czolgosz". I don't mind it, but it would have been better if they had put it on a seperate track. Victor Garber, Patrick Cassidy, and Terrence Mann all did excpetional jobs in this musical. The concept may seem weird to you, but you'll change your mind after you listen to it. I have both of the Assassins cast (this one and the '04 revival) on my iPod. I love it so much!
Music Review: Jaw Dropping Rating: 5 Stars
The only other Sondheim I'd ever heard was Pacific Overtures-a wonderfully intricate musical with glorious songs. For some reason I'd never returned to Sondheim until I decided, on a whim, to pick up Assassins. Thank goodness I did! Certainly one of the best and definitely the most unique musical ever to hit Broadway this is a story of amazing brilliance. A stirring view into the life of famous American assassins this one act musical is one that everyone should hear just once to know how great a production can be. I encourage anyone to marvel at it's simplicity and depth. I guess I just should stop or else I'll go on all day. Go and buy it!
Music Review: Differerent, Dangerous, and Delightful Rating: 5 Stars
Stephen Sondheim is a GOD! Throughout all his musicals you see a versatility and a willingness to try anything. Assassins is a forray into the minds of certain Presedential Assassins (or at least attempted Assassins). The music is glorious (especially Unworthy of Your Love), and if you listen it depicts ever so slight references to country style twang. However, it is all his own. Of course it was never a big hit, however, how many of the masses are going to want to sit down and watch a musical of this subject matter? Not many, I can tell you for sure. However, for those of us who don't mind listening to assassins, it is a marvelous CD.
Music Review: Just a great piece... Rating: 5 Stars
This is a tremendous recording, and it's sad the show is so obscure. Victor Garber's Booth alone is worth the price of the CD. A lot of the questionable themes in the show are not so questionable as they seem if you read the script of Assassins as well. This is really a wonderful piece of the besmirching of the American dream, on the point at which it stopped being `Every man can earn happiness' and became `Every man is owed happiness'. Sondheim could have written this show about lawyers, and suing everybody, with the same idea. (Admittedly, the dramatic possibilities of a musical about excessive litigation are kind of slim.)
