Music Review: Swings and kicks with guests who get loose

Ray Benson has spent nealy three deacades keeping the light on for Bob Wills' legacy. He's earned six Grammys for his efforts, and obviously the respect of his peers -- many of whom join perhaps the longest, tallest Texan for RIDE WITH BOB, a loose and swinging survey of the ultimate Texas Playboy's music.Whether it's a frenetic "Roly Poly," featuring the hellbent vocalizing of Dixie Chick Natalie Maines, or the cartoonish mope of high country yodeler Don Walser, RIDE WITH BOB isn't afraid of the extremes within Wills' repertoire. Nor is it afraid of pairing people up -- whether it's the unlikely matching of Willie Nelson with Manhattan Transfer for a sobbing "Farewell Party" or the Squirrel Nut Zippers adding a spark to Merle haggard's fairly juicy double-entendre-laden "St Louis Blues." And even the straightforward Nashville mainstream numbers elevate the brandnamers from the assemblyline craft many are subject to for a little fun and hardcore country. Listening to Reba McEntire nailing down "Right Or Wrong" does more to illustrate her traditional country credentials than anything she's done in recent years, while Leann Womack's "Heart To Heart Talk" sets her up as the heir apparent to a hard country crown no one seems to want in the post-Shania apocalypse. Even Dwight Yoakam, who's "San Antonio Rose," and Lyle Lovett and Shawn Colvin, who's "Faded Love," seem like obvious cool country choices. But on RIDE WITH BOB, it's not about being touchstones and bringing life force and passion to the table. Anchoring it all, Asleep at the Wheel continue to shine. Though no one has written a tribute to Benson + Co. a la "Bob Wills Is Still The King," there's still hope. With an album like RIDE WITH BOB to inspire them, there's now also plenty of reason.
