Music reviews of I Am MeMusic Review: "I Am Me" "Autobiography" If we already met you in the first...why show the same again? Rating: 3 Stars
With the title "I Am Me" Ashlee seems to be redundant. If her last cd was called "Autobiography" wasn't that her too? So are we hearing the exact same thing? Yes we are, but somehow...some of it works. I think that since Ashlee Simpson made the mistake on SNL, she won't be given a fair chance. Though she may turn out to be a scape goat for a lot of anti-pop people, I hope she knows that she will forever have to come with her A-game.
1. Boyfriend - Boyfriend has a really catchy chorus. Ashlee is good at writing great chorus'. The "ha's" sound a bit hoarse and forced and choreographed. I think it would be far more interesting to see Ashlee let go with this song. Also the bridge is a bit empty and unfinished, but the song is really good nonetheless. The "I didn't steal your boyfriend" line carries the weight of the song through to the end. Not the best song on the album though.
2. Another Life - This song sounds like she is doing a cover of a Hilary Duff song. It's not edgy. It sounds like Hilary Duff trying to be edgy and it would fit as a song in a Disney movie. It's a very cute song and good if you want an uptempo love song, but Ashlee's high notes seem to be stifled and out of her range. Nice song if you are thinking about a good boy/girlfriend.
3. Beautifuly Broken - Ashlee tries to express her feelings about being torn down in the media but it comes across in a very paint by numbers kind of way. It lacks a bit of emotion, but the chorus is perfect for her range. She switches to the breathy singing for the verses which is probably a mistake. I always listen to this song and I only walk away with the chorus. It's simple and sweet. I wish at the end of the song I wish she would have let the beat fade out instead of ending it the same as the others.
4. L*O*V*E - This is a really catchy song. The chorus will make this song extremely popular. It's infectious. It's simple. And it's creative because of the way she sings it, so that makes it interesting on its own. The first verse is really good, but the second verse lacks the same originality. It doesn't flow as well as the first. The second seems rushed as far as the writing goes. The beat is groovy and the whole song is about togetherness. I, again, wish that she did not end the song this way. She sounds terribly hoarse. I think she should have stayed in the same range as the rest of the song. Even with those critiques, this song is really catchy. Expect lots of radio play.
5. Coming Back For More - This song is pretty cool. The chorus is really nice and the verses match that same quality. It's really smooth and polished, though at times her voice is lost behind the beat. This should be her 4th single, after the two uptempo songs and ballad. It's really good.
6. Dancing Alone - Even if the title hadn't suggested it, this song is a song to blast in your room when you have had just a bad day and need to release. Noone looking, just you and the lyrics and jumping on the bed. This song is really about not caring that you are alone and embracing that. I think this is a great song with a great concept. The lyrics are quite young, but if you can get past that, you'll appreciate what she is trying to say. I think Ashlee should work on the way she says certain words because it is hard to hear what she is saying at times. The way she ended this song was perfect.
7. Burnin Up - This song actually sounds like it could have been produced by P. Diddy and resembles the song of the same name sang by Faith Evans. The song is really sexy and breathy and is a good song, but it just doesn't fit Ashlee. It's a good song and she did an okay job, but it isn't for her. It would fit Britney Spears much better who does the sexy breathy vocals much better. It sounds as if Ashlee gets her vocal training from an aging porn star who fakes it [Insert chorus]. It is a good song, but a misstep for Ashlee. This could have gone in her catalog for someone else to buy and use. The verses are really fun and the song is ended nicely, without the yelled hoarse vocals. There is a difference between hoarse and raspy.
8. Catch Me When I Fall - I am on the fence about this song. It is nicely written and it will probably be the third single, behind Boyfriend and L*O*V*E. I just feel Ashlee is looking for sympathy and acceptance when I would have enjoyed her making a song that says "I did it and I regret it and I accept responsibility, but I won't quit". This seems as if it is someone else's job to fix it for her still. A nice song though, but not the best ballad on this disc by any means.
9. I Am Me - This song is by far the best rock-driven song on the entire disc. It trumps every other song on the cd. It, for me, beats La La. La La was light and fun, but heavily guitar driven. I Am Me is heavy on guitars, but much darker. Her vocals are husky and low and dark and they absolutely work. The lyrics are amazing. The chorus is amazing. Boyfriend gathered a small bit of media attention because of Ashlee coyly denying it being about Wilmer & Lindsay, but it did not do well enough because she denied it. If she would have said it was about the situation, then critics would see that she has balls. I Am Me would have focused more on her vocal ability and would show that she actually can be what she says she is (Rock/Punk).
10. Eyes Wide Open - This song is really nice and catchy. It has a good chorus and the verses are nice, but it is sort of forgetable. It seems like album filler, although good filler. The verses are a good build up to the chorus. It's a very vulnerable song, but that is sort of lost on the uptempo. I love the fade out at the end.
11. Say Goodbye - This is the most vulnerable ballad on the whole disc. Ashlee's voice actually shines on this cd. Her limited vocal ability actually works on this song. It seems like something Jessica would butcher and over sing. Ashlee sounds soft and cute and feminine. It's like she's actually bringing you into her heart and showing you the pain that she felt. She doensn't sound hoarse, she doesn't oversing. Even when she sings the word "scream" its soft and actually... "pretty". She did an amazing song. If she was smart, this would be the ballad single, instead of "Catch Me". This is by the far the best Ashlee ballad ever. If you listen to the words, you might find a tear in your eye. (Maybe).

Description of I Am MeUK pressing features two bonus tracks, 'Kicking And Screaming' and 'Fall in Love with Me'. This is Ashlee's sophomore album and the follow-up to Autobiography. Features the lead-off single 'Boyfriend'. 13 tracks in total. Universal. 2005. For saboteurs of records that sound good because of elements completely unrelated to the artist, Ashlee Simpson's sophomore effort, I Am Me, may well be a dream disc. The production is a tight-wrapped, A-type achievement and, with sounds running from hip-hop (the unstoppably infectious "L.O.V.E.") to vintage '80s (the lusty "Dancing Alone") to Synchronicity-era Sting (the energetic, pulsing "Boyfriend") to airwave-friendly ballads that sister Jessica might have choked her way through ("Catch Me When I Fall"), the music sucks you in more reliably than a bagless Dyson. But instead of Ashlee Simpson, credit for both those things - really, for the way this disc favorably insinuates itself into a listener's head overall - belongs to producer/keyboardist/bassist/guitarist John Shanks. Ardent Ashlee-ites, of course, will beg to differ, and they won't be without their points: In addition to co-writing each of these 11 songs, some of which ("Beautifully Broken," a response to her "Saturday Night Live" lip-synching debacle) are more sophisticated than others ("Burnin' Up," a Madonna-reminiscent, reggae-style romp), she sings in a voice as artfully burnished and appealing as it was on her 2004 debut. She makes you want to la la all over again, and for that, and for finding the right guy to orchestrate this acknowledgment-heavy jewel, you've got to like her. --Tammy La Gorce
