Music reviews of Autobiography

Music Review: A decent rock cd, with a hint of pop & some nice ballads : )
Rating: 4 Stars

(The limit didn't allow me to review every song)

AUTOBIOGRAPHY: Starts with a guitar picking away and soon we hear Ash's voice come into the music. (You think you know me, word on the street is that you do, you want my history)

Next she swoops upward into a loud and raspy, yet pleasant singing voice (I walked a thousand miles while everyone was asleep,Nobody's really seen my million subleties) After the last word everything fades out for just a moment and the chorus kicks in with full force (got stains on my tshirt and i'm the biggest flirt)

Now to the bridge - the guitar goes along with some pounding drums and just a few seconds later ashlee jumps in and pounds with them. (I'm the baddest girl in this messed up world) Then we get to the best part where she screams in her wonderfully unique voice (You wanna mess with meee?!) and then the chorus comes back in with an extra verse or so and the song ends

Rating: 9/10

PIECES OF ME

Rating: 8/10

SHADOW: starts off with a low soothing guitar note and you can also hear some extra melodic tunes playing in the background.

Soon enough ashlee "walks in" and sings (I was six years old when my parents went away..She was beautiful...And my escape was hiding out and running for the door)

After "door" her voice sours upward just a bit and the music is heard a little louder (somebody listen please, it used to be so hard being me) Then she says the first verse from the chorus (livin in the shadow) Just as she says shadow all the instruments kick in from their momentary rest. (trying to find a hand to hold, but every touch felt cold to me)

As she sings the chorus it can get very addicting and it's still heartfelt (but now that I am wide awake my chains are finally free, don't feel sorry for me)

Throughout the next few verses she begins to reveal that she is finally stepping out of her sisters shadow and the chorus kicks back in, satisfyingly. After her last few words of the chorus her words fade into the climax. (mother, sister, father, sister, mother, everything's cool now) Then, (oh my life is good, i've got more than anyone should...and the past is in the past) At past she fades out very nicely and walks toward the chorus once again, only she is "whispering" /saying it in a lower tone and she sings (i was living in the shadow of someone else's dream, trying to find a hand to hold...) and she sounds helpless and you couldn't help but feel sorry for her haunting vocals here...

...but before you feel sorry for her she calls forth all instruments in the chorus back by screaming (but every touch felt cold to me) and there is a few new lines and the end ends with (livin' in a new day) and ends pleasantly

Rating: 10/10

LALA: Starts with a Symbol's *psh* then the guitar kicks in and the tumbling drumbs also.

Then Ashlee comes in with a not necessarily"new" voice but a different one from what we've heard so far. (You can dress me up in diamoads, you can dress me up in dirt) Soon we can feel the chorus creeping up as she sings (oohh, i have waited here for you, i have waited) Then everything goes quiet for a ting second and then you get ashlee screamin' (you make me wanna lala) and with "lala" the guitars kick in (I'll be your french maid where I'll meet you at the door) It has a very rock "punk" feel to it

Bridge...Get some guitars going on again with some extra sounds and here's ashlee (i feel safe with you, i can be myself tonight) At the bridge we get (you make me wanna lala, lalala, lalalala lala) and then the chorus kicks in and later we get another lala repetion craze! but it's fun and is filled with all sorts of instruments and other dif. sounds around it

Rating: 8/10

LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND

Rating: 6/10

BETTER OFF

Rating: 6/10

LOVE FOR ME: It starts off with some little "007 sound" on the guitar, then the drums dribble in and the guitar has that off and on thing heh heh...(it's been, three days, you come around here like you know me, your stuff, at my place, next thing you know you'll be using my tooth paste) As we get into this verse (Don't care where you think you've been) She sings the song a little differently and builds to the chorus.

And the chorus sings (here i am, as perfect as i'm ever gonna be, you'll see, love me for me) Mid - It keeps building but then goes down and then builds again (I've been waiting all my life, to finally find you, just so i can push you away...) then we get a cool rock 'n' roll *UGH!* sound and back to the chorus we go

Rating: 8/10

SURRENDER: This one has an interesting opening, one i can't really explain but she starts after that with (if that's the way you want it, well there you go, baby you can have it all, now that you just let me go) then the guitars kick up (yeah yeah, yeah yeah)

The chorus is pretty average souding compared to the other parts but the portion (All you have to do is just surrender, just surrender) isn't bad

Bridge.. (you know it doesn't matter what you do, don't you know i'm so over you)Then we get our first guitar solo on the cd, it sounds pretty nice. Next we get back into the mid with (Open up your eyes, don't you know that it's your life)

And next thing you know we're back into the chorus..the ending is nice, it simply says (if that's the way you want it, well there you go)

Rating: 8/10

UNREACHABLE: Starts off with drums and the piano, a nice, new opening...(just like an angel you're gonna make me fly) she uses another "new" voice...a slower one, cuz this is a ballad
now to the chorus (you got me crawling so bad, got me heels over head, you got me easy, you got me easy, tangled up in my head, quit trying to quit trying to hold on to help me, cause we're already beautiful) and then the music kicks up a notch (so don't make me cry, cause this love don't feel so right, you can't push a river, you can't make me fall, but you can make me, unreachable) While she's singing that she has her background vocals acting as an "echo" and singing what she just said.

Mid - (sometimes love is addiction, sometimes it hurts like hell...you can't make me love you anymore than i do, but you can, make me, unreachable) It's a nice break from the chorus, it changes the music up a bit with the piano and a few other sounds...and then we get back into the chorus and it repeats twice..the second time theirs an addition to the guitars there's another one,i thought it was necassary to point out cause it makes it a little more, hmmm, for lack of better words, dramatic?

Rating: 10/10

NOTHING NEW: a simple guitar opening and another talk-sing voice going on, which is not a bad thing ;) (I find myslef wrong again, staring out my window, wondering what it is i should've said, i find myself home again, waiting for the after call, from a fallout that feels like such a mess) Next we are given a change in voice (oohh, i can only be myself, I'm sorry that's hell for you) Then the drums do their famous "dribble" and we get a pause and the chorus then busts in (heeyy, so what's my damage todaayy, don't let me get in your way, let it out like you always do, the trouble between me and you, is nothing new)

Mid - (you know how to give it, but you can't take it, it's just a waste, so now you can save it, no matter what i do...it's never good enough, never good enougghh)Not too much going on here just little bit of a voice change, especially on "never good enough" and then we are sent back to the chorus, which is a good thing cuz the chorus is extremely addicting

Rating: 9/10

GIVING IT ALL AWAY: Starting off with an acoustic going at it and ashlee singing (hey you, livin for tomorrow/ hey you, smoking up your sorrow, just pointing fingers at someone to blame) soon we are put into the Catchy-vanessa carlton feel chorus (You're just giving it all, giving it all away...)

At mid-point we are given the third person reference and then it's swapped from (hey girl, screamin for attention, once you get it you throw it all away) to 1st person (I'm just giving it all, giving it all away)

Rating: 8/10

UNDISCOVERED: The music fades in and we get a pleasant/soothing guitar and a simple little beat and ashlee starts singing (take it back, take it all back now, the things i gave like the taste of my kiss on your lips...i miss that now...) and once the chorus comes up we are completley drawn in (all the things left undiscovered, leave me waiting and left to wonder, I need you...yeah i need you, don't walk away) It's not so much lyrically that it's beautiful it's just how the music goes along with it, it's simple yet it has strings attatched to it in the background, with a few extra sounds as well..and ash's voice just tops it off and the way it's sung is just...perfect.

Mid - Then ash and all start building(when i'm in the dark and all alone, dreaming that you'll walk right through my door, it's then i know my heart is whole...There's a million reasons why i cry, hold my covers tight and close my eyes, cause i dont' wanna be alone) the strings get louder during "there's a million..." and then the chorus kicks back in. After the chorus (Cause i can't fake, and i can't hate, but it's my heart that's about to break, You're all i need, i'm on my knees, watch me bleed would you listen please) She sings that innocently but remains calm...but soon she can't take it and starts singing louder (I give in, i breathe out, i want you, there's no doubt...I freak out!, i'm left out!, without you!, i'm without!) Every word is filled with emotion and only gets better. She begins to sing even louder now and then strings also increase in volume...(I'm crossed out!! I'm kicked out!! I cry out!! I reach OUTTTT!! Dont' walk AWAAAYYY!!! Don't walk AAWAAAYYY, DON'T WALK AAWWAAAYY...don't walk away) if you really soak it all in you will be affected too...this is absolutely my fav. song by ashlee, it is packed with so much emotion and i just can't get enough of it.

Description of Autobiography

Limited edition Japanese reissue pressing of the 2004 #1 debut album features 3 bonus tracks 'Harder Everyday', 'Sorry' and 'Endless Summer'. Geffen. 2005.
You hear a lot of echoes throughout Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, but her big-eyed, bright-smiled sister Jessica isn't behind a one of them. That'll come as no surprise to fans and anyone who has caught the "darker" Simpson sister on MTV, which is responsible for hurtling the hard-edged "Pieces of Me" onto radio playlists across the country and creating a mini frenzy over this CD's content. Stoking the gossip-fueled flames is track three, "Shadow." On it, 19-year-old Ashlee spills her childhood resentment over her sister's attention-gulping career, ending up on a conciliatory note that has the surprising effect of making the Simpson divas' drama seem believable ("Everything's cool now?and the past is in the past," she sings). But serious music fans ought not to dilly-dally with the celeb stuff and dive right in, because this disc dishes up more than a lot of us bargained for. "LaLa" revs up the unsuspecting by way of out-and-out lustiness, "Love for Me" lays on the lovelorn angst thick, and the title track is a take-no-prisoners, love-me-or-leave-me rock anthem. Rippling throughout are cunningly malleable vocals, bending here for a kittenish Gwen Stefani effect, stretching there to sound Christina Aguilera-cathartic. Sweeter moments call to mind the indie sensibilities of Jill Sobule. More than others of her reality-show insta-star ilk, Ashlee Simpson's is an autobiography that shouts, "bring on the sequel." --Tammy La Gorce
