While Ruddigore is one of Gilbert & Sullivan's lesser known operettas, it's a winner. It has plenty of good tunes and a touch of melodramatic nastiness (all in fun) that's missing from most of the others. Malcolm Sargent is an old pro at conducting G&S, having spent a lot of time in the D'Oyle Carte pit in his younger days. And the cast, assembled for this recording, is excellent. Good sound. And there's a plus. The second CD contains a genrous selection of orchestral excerpts from The Merchant of venice conducted by the always capable Vivien Dunn.
