Sch?nberg wrote quite a number of lieder throughout his career which reflect the various phases of his aesthetic development from Art Nouveau to Expressionism to Modernism.
From his youth in the early-1950s, Glenn Gould was a staunch Sch?nberg advocate with the project of recording all Sch?nberg's oeuvre for piano. GG championed Sch?nberg's great Piano Concerto (Op. 42), all his works for solo piano (Opp. 11, 25, etc.) and lastly, Sch?enberg's lieder--which he prized largely due to the piano-work therein. Withal, these readings of Sch?nberg's lieder emphasize the piano's "vocalizations," with the human vocalist a tad in the shadow: and that's what makes these realizations special and great: Gould's pianism. The vocalists are fine, but they are the second member of the duo--which is a reversal of the usual arrangement.
The fourteen songs which comprise Opp. 3 & 6 date from 1899-1905 and are largely in the very latest-Romantic Art Nouveau manner, and correspond with Sch?nberg's Sextet (Op. 4) and first String Quartet (Op. 7).
The lieder Opp. 12 & 14 (1907) are Expressionistic works which correspond with Sch?nberg's second String Quartet (Op. 10) and the breach unto pantonality.
Finally, the lieder Op. 48 parallel the Piano Pieces Op. 33a-b and are 12-tone.
