Music Review: Fair enough

Armin Van Buuren returns with another new trance album, "A State of Trance 2005." It's a nice album. But it doesn't reach the quality levels of his previous "A State of Trance" album, "A State of Trance 2004." "ASOT 2004" was an adventure, exactly the type of compilation designed for trance addicts like me! There are a few reasons why "ASOT 2005" doesn't contain the value of "ASOT 2004." One important reason is because this isn't the full compilation. The full compilation is available in Europe and not here in the US! The "ASOT 2005" overseas has 15 tracks on disc one and 17 tracks on disc two while this US album has only 13 tracks each on both discs. This is why both mixes end in fade-outs. I don't understand why they did this. But I know they did this, and I'm disappointed by it. I'm glad I purchased this for $13 instead of more than $20, a common price for CDs like these. I am planning on ordering the full album from import. I purchased the US version because I at least wanted an "ASOT 2005" album as soon as I can get one. It's better to have part of the compilation than no compilation at all. I'm sticking with what I have until I get the imported "ASOT 2005."
Anyway, there's some nice tracks on both discs. Disc one has songs like Interstate's "I Found You." This track is appropriate enough to kick off the mix on disc one. I've been listening to "I Found You" since last September, so I got what I expected from the beginning. Another song on here is "Space Guitar" by Mike Foyle. When I first read the tracklist of this album, I thought it was going to sound intergalactic (Space) and rockin' (Guitar). I got neither of those from that track. What's good about it is that it sounds more psychadelic. There's also Armin's single, "Shivers." This is the kind of track that I enjoy listening to while driving or doing math homework. I feel more confident doing trigonometry while listening to "Shivers." My favorite track on disc one is "Aerospace" by Locust. This tune is very interesting. It's not like the other spacey trance anthems I've heard before. This is unique. Disc one has other tracks like "In The End" by Ave Mea. A guy in the song says "In the end" in a deep voice after the first fourty seconds of the track, which is immediately followed by some cool keyboarding. That's some amazing keyboarding. Disc one also includes "First Time" by Markus Schulz, "Ocean Rain" by Elevation, Enmass' "Beyond Horizon," Kyau Vs. Albert's "Falling Everywhere," and more.
Disc two contains trance anthems like "Crackdown" by Remy. This song would sound great in action movies. Sometimes, when I'm in my room listening to this tune, I'd pretend I'm an action hero. I'd jump everywhere in my room! It's too bad it's only three minutes long. It's too nice a song to be that short. Other songs on disc two include "808" by Nu Frequency. Any song named after a three-digit number should be very interesting. This song and Peter Martin's "Simply Blue" sound like music for Nascar. I'll definitly be playing these tracks when I go over to the New Hampshire International Speedway for the Nextel Cup race, the New England 300 in July. Gabriel & Dresden's "Arcadia" is also on here. This track stands out from the mix. But it's an excellent track. I always feel better every time I hear it. I've been grieving over the loss of an American Hockey League (AHL) team I used to be a fan of, the Worcester IceCats (and I was deeply attached to this team, despite living fourty miles from that city). They just moved out of Worcester, Massachusetts to Peoria, Illinois for the 2005-06 season. Listening to "Arcadia" makes me feel as if it's never happened! Congratulations, Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden! Kyau vs. Albert's has another single on this compilation, "Made Of Sun (KvA Hard Dub - AVB Edit)." Even though it's the last track on the disc and ends in a fade out, I gotta say, the fade out works at the end. As for the track itself, it definitely has a warm feeling to it. I feel as if I'm at the beach. The track is called "Made Of Sun" after all. Other songs include Andy Moor's "Halcyon," Tilt's "Twelve," the E-Craig 212 Vocal Mix of Blank & Jones' "Perfect Silence," "Papel" by O. Lieb vs. Preach ("O" for "Oliver"), and more.
Like I said, this isn't as good as his previous "A State Of Trance" album. But Armin still put plenty of effort into these mixes. It may be better than I already know. I'll just have to find out once I get the imported version. The imported compilation may have around equal quality to last year's "ASOT." Overall, "ASOT 2005" is a good two-disc album.
