Music Review: Good for a once-a-decade listen

Arlo Guthrie is best known for four songs. They are all here -- "Alice's Restaurant," "The Motorcycle Song," "City of New Orleans" and "Coming into Los Angeles." What's curious is that he no longer sings the first two (overdone), didn't write the third, and the fourth is about smuggling illegal drugs into the country. An interesting batch of hits! The rest of the tunes are well-performed, but mostly unmemorable. Arlo is a talented guitarist, but I dislike his smarty-pants pose. I confess that neither his stories nor his music are particularly compelling. One exception is "Gabriel's Mother's Hiway Ballad #16 Blues" which is a bluesy gospel tune that almost had heart. Of the hits, his wistful rendition of "City of New Orleans" is an American classic.
I picked up this CD to hear "Alice's Restaurant," which believe it or not, I had never heard, though I knew the tune since the early 1970s. A fun CD, I guess, for the occasional listen, but not interesting enough for the iPod rotation. Pick this up if you are a fan. Otherwise, plunk down 99 cents at the Apple store for the couple of decent cuts.
