Music reviews of So Red the Rose

Music Review: Arcadia, Duran Duran's Gothic New Romantic Album
Rating: 4 Stars

Arcadia's only effort was 1985's "So Red The Rose" . It was a homage to Roxy Music. The ethereal side of Duran Duran featuring members Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor and produced by the late Alex Sadkin. I will attempt to disect this album track by track. I will interject my own observations to flesh out this review. This album was recorded in Paris and features guest musicians such as Sting (guest vocals), Herbie Hancock (keyboards),David Gilmour (guitar), Andy MacKay(saxophone), Grace Jones (guest vocals), Carlos Alomar (guitar), Masami Tsuchiya(guitar) and Bass Player David Van Tieghem.

Track One: Election Day- This is their only top 10 song. It features Grace Jones on vocals and Andy MacKay on sax. This track is unusual in tone. Upon listening to this track one can't help but think about some strange take on Gypsy music. By that I mean if medieval Gypsies had modern music technology their folk-songs would probably sound like this.

Track Two: Keep Me In The Dark- Probably one of the best written songs on this album. Features Nick Rhodes experiments with the Fairlight Computer Keyboard. It was rumored that this song was to be featured in the Ridley Scott film LEGEND. When I listen to this track I come away with the feeling that one should not fear the dark or a lover who resides in melancholy. Just a dark romantic theme.

Track Three: Goodbye Is Forever- I would like to say that this track be a great attachment to a Dear John letter. This song seems that it could have worked or fit in a Roxy Music album. It has all the elements that hark back to the early work of Bryan Ferry and Company. Sentimental in refrain. Worth a listen. It was a Top 40 follow up to Election Day and was not given enough airplay. Could have been a Top 10 single if American radio would have given it a chance. There is a wonderful esoteric video for this track.

Track Four: The Flame- Once again a showcase for Nick Rhodes' keyboard skills. Not my favorite track but it is interesting to listen to this dance track.

Track Five: Missing- This is an ususual track in that it is basically musical prose featuring Simon LeBon's vocals over Andy MacKay's sax and David Van Tieghem's fretless bass. It is beautiful in it's purpose and really fits the theme of Aracadia. Aracadia is basically a rustic paradise. This track could have been written by one of the Romantic Poets to woo a beautiful young womnan. It should also be noted that this is one of the tracks not co-written by Arcadia member Roger Taylor.

Track Six: Rose Arcana- A stark short instrumental. This trac was written by LeBon and Rhodes and features a beautifully played fretless bass and percussion instruments with keyboards laying the foundation. Interesting but it should have been expanded into a full instrumental. It would have been interesting to see what the group could have done if they went further with this track.

Track Seven: The Promise- This is a total group effort that stresses more musicianship. Sting is the co-lead vocalist. This track also features Andy MacKay on sax, David Gilmour on guitar, Herbie Hancock on Keyboards and Carlos Alomar on rhythm guitar. Wonderful track that should have made the U.S. Top 40.

Track Eight: El Diablo- This track seems like something that Goethe could have written if he were a musician. With it's Faustian theme I love the violin and woodwind and Spanish style guitar, very European. Lyrically, some of the best work Simon LeBon has ever written. Personally, it is one of my favorite tracks.

Track Nine: Lady Ice- My overall favorite on this album. This song would make Bryan Ferry very proud. It has all the great elements of a gothic new romantic track. Beautifully arranged keyboards and interesting drum beat from Roger Taylor and the two standouts on the song are Simon LeBon's vocals and lyrics and David Van Tieghems fretless bass. When you listen to this track it conjures up images of Eastern European winters, haunted castles and maybe beauty in the form of a raven-haired, pale skin woman. One of the longest tracks on the album but definetly worth a listen.

Although this album was a platinum seller in 1985 it didn't garner the attention that the other Duran Duran splinter group The Powerstation did. It is a wonderful companion to Duran Duran's first LP and just an all around great album. I highly recommend this album to those who want to get acquainted with the total Duran Duran experience.
