Music reviews of FuneralMusic Review: Wow Rating: 5 Stars
(The following review was posted on amazon June 7, 2005 and below it is my added comments from June 11, 2006)
I don't even know where to begin. Every track on this album is awe-inspiringly amazing, using a massive variety of instruments to create a joyously beautiful sound. Oasis was my favorite band before this album (mainly due to their older stuff rather than their later stuff) and before that it was Our Lady Peace...but I have never, ever, EVER come across an album that is as incredible as this one. My friend got me to listen to Rebellion (Lies) and I was hooked. From there, I got more and more excited with each track that I heard. I just could not believe how incredible the music I was hearing was.
This is the first album I've bought since Our Lady Peace's Spiritual Machines. You know that old question where you're given a choice of one album to bring with you if you get stuck on an island? This is it, that album that you'd want to bring with you. My previous favorite album (Definitely Maybe) does not come close to this incredible work.
Some of the slower songs took a little longer to grow on me (Une Annee, 7 Kettles) but once I gave them some time, I loved them just as much as the rest of the album.
Frankly, I have a hard time picking favorites on this album cause just about every song is my favorite. But Wake Up really stands out, as well as Neighborhood #1 (Laika) and Neighborhood #2 (Tunnels). But seriously, this is one of those brilliant albums where there is no filler. I've been listening to this album nonstop for the past month and it won't get out of my head.
I honestly have never experienced a band that I've been as excited about as Arcade Fire. And judging from the momentum they have right now, they're gonna be big. Bowie, David Byrne, Bjork, Coldplay, and Beck have all listed themselves as fans, and for good reason.
I've only ever really been to one concert but I am getting tickets to the Guelph Hillside Fest in July just to go see them (I live in Ottawa). I don't know what more I can do to convince someone reading this to check them out except that I don't think I'll ever get to experience another album as good as Funeral.
EDITED TO ADD (on Jun 11, 2006):
So it's been a year since I wrote the above and first heard the Arcade Fire and I thought I'd just reiterate how much I love this album. It's been over a year since I first heard the Arcade Fire and I have lost none of my love for this album. It is easily the defining album of music for me - the album that I could listen to on repeat non-stop for the next year and not get sick of it.
And I'd like to just comment on some of the things people who disliked this album have said - people are not giving this five stars just cause "everyone else is doing it". At least, speaking for myself, I sure wasn't. I didn't listen to a lot of indie when I first heard Rebellion (Lies) - I didn't know who they were - but I LOVED this song and something about it just compelled me to check out the rest of the songs on this album - and it blew me away, before I knew that this band was hyped up etc...
And I think it's worth it for anyone to check this album out - there's always going to be people who hate something others like (and that's just personal preferences and taste - for example - I think Crash is a terrible movie but I'm definitely in the minority there) - but this album will have such a big impact on so many people that it's worth it to give it a shot, even if you end up being one of the few people who hate the album. Cause for every one person who hates this album, there's another five who are blown away.
As for the one-star reviews which say the Arcade Fire have no songwriting abilities? Those reviews I cannot understand at all. If nothing else, the one thing I'd think everyone would be able to appreciate are their songwriting abilities. And the music is certainly catchy...
This is the album that got me into indie. This is the album that changed my musical taste - not that it wasn't already evolving, but this album pushed it further, faster. I owe discovering The Flaming Lips and countless other bands to this initial album. Not to say that the stuff I've discovered because of them has all been great - but I'm just trying to point out the impact this album has had on me. I think I'm going to leave off this edited review with an excerpt from my MSN Space back last May when I had first started listening to the Arcade Fire...it perfectly sums up my Arcade Fire obsession.
"I'm sorry, I really am. But I can't get Arcade Fire out of my mind. Not even my three absolute favorite artists (OLP before Gravity, Oasis, and Elliott Smith) had this kind of addictive impact on me.
Funeral has been spinning in my CD player nonstop at school, on the bus, and blasting from the sound system at home - yes, I even studied math last night while it was playing. Not to mention just scrounging up anything I can on Arcade Fire and their shows. The more I read about the meanings of their songs, the better they are. The more I watch their performances (on Conan, Joel Grey, etc), the more stunned I am. The more I listen to their songs, the better they get (the two that I found a bit weaker for me were Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) and Une Annee Sans Lumiere which have both become great tracks after a few listens). There honestly is not one weak track on this album. Not one.
Every single track could be an awesome single. And I'd say Neighborhood #1-3, Wake Up, Rebellion (Lies), and In the Backseat are my favorites on this album, except that's already 60% of the album right there + the others could almost just as easily be exchanged for any of these songs and the quality level wouldn't drop. This is not hyperbole - I absof*ckinlutely love this album even with the short time I've had it and I can't imagine that I'll ever buy or listen to another album that surpasses this. EVER. None of my favorite bands or artists have outputted an album that comes close to this.
And the incredible metaphorical cycle put forward by Neighborhood #1-4 is amazing. Not to mention the stunning instrumentation of their songs. This is stuff that works on every level. If based solely on this CD, Arcade Fire would easily be my favorite band. For sure, they're one of my favorite bands now."
-And yes, since then Arcade Fire has become my favorite band.

Description of FuneralMontreal's Arcade Fire brings a theatricality, an intensity, an insanity, and a penchant for amazing hooks to their debut full-length. You've never heard such energy, beauty, and emotion from such a young band. Fans of Neutral Milk Hotel, Broken Social Scene, and Roxy Music's first two albums will have a new favorite band.
