Music Review: Only available 'original' - wish it were better

I've been enraptured by this ballet since I stumbled across WWII recordings of 'selections' of the 1942 original back in the '60's when I was still a kid. Later in the '70's I was thrilled when Loris Tjeknavorian's rendition of the complete 1942 score was released on an LP set by RCA, and even though there were places where either the performance or audio fidelity were lacking, the spirit of the dances stood out like the older recordings.
In the '90's I tried to find it on CD but could only find the 1957(?) 'revised' Melodiya version, which seemed so different I really didn't care much for it at all. When I saw that RCA had released Tjeknavorian's recording on CD, I snapped it up, only to be a bit disappointed. I still have the LPs and despite the defects inherent in the media, the fidelity is better than the CDs. As is often the case, it's as if the LPs had been mastered in their day from new pristine tapes and the CDs years later from old ones that had lost their audio freshness.
Some years ago I actually exchanged emails with Mr. Tjeknavorian inquiring whether he knew of any plans to re-record the original 1942 score of this captivating ballet, and sadly he said that as much as he wished it could be so, the music was too obscure for labels and investors to want to bother.
A good recording of the 1957 version already exists in the Melodiya catalog. We can only hope that maybe someday an investor, perhaps Russian, will take on the project of sponsoring a fresh recording of the original 1942 version.
