Music Review: Warning! The Khachaturian is Not in Stereo

EMI is to be chided here for their labeling because they don't make it clear that the excellently played recording of the Violin Concerto of Aram Khachaturian presented here is not recorded in stereo. There is a stereo remake of this pairing of the great Oistrakh with Khachaturian conducting the Philharmonia on a multi-disc set of great and notable recordings by King David Oistrakh, but unfortunately, this disc contains the earlier one made just before the stereo era. The playing by all is excellent, but the sound is too murky to be acceptable to the general public. If you do purchase this disc because you love Oistrakh, you'll have to turn up the volume for the concerto, but you'll have to quickly turn it down again as that work ends, because the mediocre filler by Taneyev IS in stereo and you may damage your speakers! Taneyev was a student of Tchiakovsky, but he possessed none of his master's genius, and you may listen to his Suite once, but probably won't care to hear it again, even though it is played here by one of the finest violinists ever to record it.
P.S. I recently played this cd in my car, and it sounds very good on the plain stereo cd player and in the small space of my car. I could hear much more detail than on either of my large home systems, both geared for SACD and similar material.
