Music Review: Sarah Chang: Exhilarating Excitement and Beauty

Sarah Chang is at the same time quick, kinetic and eminently precise. When she pauses during a performance, her silence is equally powerful, for she has just created a magic that penetrates the depths of our consciousness. And the beauty of her, standing in the orchestra hall in her ocean foam green evening gown, in complete control of the element, is inspiring. I saw her performance of Dvorak's Violin Concerto at The New York Philharmonic last year. Sarah has a presence and charismatic star quality that transcends formidable skills, so that the concert experience with her takes on a meaning to a whole new level. Recently Sarah has been selecting a daring repertory keeping her fans guessing where she will take us next. Well, I haven't been disappointed yet. Dvorak's Concerto is the perfect vehicle for her combination of delicate softness, sweet perfect notes and lightning fast combinations. The lyrical and pastoral whimsy and sugary heaven of the piece combines with its dark brooding romanticism and contra-tonal harmonics. Sarah brings out every nuance in the composition with help from her fine conductor. Sir Colin Davis and his London Symphony Orchestra are masterful in supporting what can only be described as a virtuoso. When you are playing with an immortal, you remain focused and keep out of their way. Davis stays disciplined and keeps his players in perfect lockstep, forming a rearguard and counter-assault to Sarah's brilliant offensive and defensive strategies. It is a noble and heroic battle where we the listeners are victorious. For purposes of brevity I won't review the fine Dvorak Piano Quintet in A with Leif Ove Andsnes which is also on this CD, which was also on the concert program last year. After the performance I met Sarah at the autograph signing session. For all you fans wondering, she really is even more beautiful in person even than her beautiful photos on her recordings. She seems to be sprinkled with stardust and her eyes and her smile sparkle. She is a star. I remarked to her, "I didn't think there was any way you could get better, but I guess I was wrong." Sarah is constantly venturing for more unique pieces. I can't imagine what her next project will be. In January I saw her perform the Shostakovich Violin Concerto, which was unparalleled. Her genius and lovely brilliance will no doubt lead her to some new unpredictable triumph where she will add to a legend that shimmers with glittering elegance, exhilaration, and excitement. Bravo!!
