For my money Dvorak's symphonic cycle is one of the glories of all symphonic music! and this set is a prime example of this.In brief the 1st- 4th are the best Ive heard;the 5th is superb;the 6th very good;8th & 9th are on my short list of preferred recordings The .only reservation I have is the 7th which to my ears received sound not up to the overall quallity of the rest of this set.For the 7th try Dohnanyi & Cleveland on Decca;also try Chung's fine 6th & 8th DG & Fischers 8th & 9th Philips.That said whether you are new to to this music or not & dont have this set you are missing out on beautiful music given both profound and rousing performances by all involved.Add all this to the cost of this set -grab it! P.S. the overatures are equally fine.

Description of Dvor?k: The Symphonies [Box Set]

For decades, there were only three complete collections of Dvor?k's symphonies: this one; Rowicki's with the same orchestra; and Kubelik's with the Berlin Philharmonic. Kert?sz offers the most rustic, gutsy interpretations of all. Famous for his dislike of rehearsals, he allows the London Symphony to make a much rougher sound than his colleagues tolerate, and though not the last word in polish, the results have a spontaneous charm that's pretty hard to resist. More to the point, Dvor?k's early symphonies (Nos. 1 to 5) remain sadly neglected, and each one of them is full of gorgeous tunes cloaked in mellifluous orchestration. At budget price, this set now costs less than it did on LP in the 1960s. How can you do better than that? --David Hurwitz
