Music Review: One Of The Greatest 9ths I've Heard....

And I've heard almost all the modern recordings of it. Giulini is simply a great Brucknerian. He's actually much better than Jochum. Too bad he didn't record an entire Bruckner cycle. Unlike Jochum, Giulini has a better sense of the inner dynamics of the symphony and also how to navigate through the tempi. The "Scherzo" movement, which for me is a movement that must be played at a certain tempo, is one of the best I've heard. What really got my heart pounding was the 3rd movement "Adagio. Langsam, feierlich," which is really astounding. I love the way Giulini handles this movement, especially when he signals those huge brass chorales. It sent chills down my spine!
I simply cannot compare this recording with any other 9th recording, because it's, to it put simply, in a class of its' own. The playing from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is exemplary. Those brass chorales are really a sonic marvel that Bruckner wrote and they come through loud and clear in this recording. The audio quality is also very good.
There's absolutely nothing I can find wrong here. It is magnificient! 5+ stars
