Music Review: A must for any lover of Bruckner

This is something of a must for all Bruckner fans, and remains in many ways a reference recording for the fourth symphony (although I am not sure it is necessarily superior to, say, Wand's account). There are several reasons for that. First of all, Jochum's pacing of the work is more or less ideal, and even Bruckner's often somewhat abrupt juxtapositions come across as eminently convincing and natural in Jochum's hands. The first movement is particularly impressive in this respect. In the slow movement, however, Jochum achieves a level of serenity and shimmering beauty that has been challenged by few others.
Another factor that makes this recording such a success is the immaculate but gorgeous playing of the Berlin Philharmonic, especially with respect to textures - the textures here are warm but transparent, with the timbres of the various sections clearly separated (this is especially important in the faster movements, the scherzo and finale in particular). The only possible downside is the sound quality. It is generally good, but a little thin and scrawny. As a surprising coupling we get an older recording of Sibelius wonderfully atmospheric tone poem Nightride and Sunrise in a powerful performance but unfortunately rather bad sound. Still, this is something of an essential acquisition for any Bruckner fan.
