Music reviews of Comin From Where I'm From

Music Review: what took them so long to discover this man?
Rating: 4 Stars

You know, I read Anthony Hamilton's story on his Web site and I was somewhat surprised that it took him so long to be discovered. How can someone, with what is obviously a unique and different style and voice, take 10 years to be discovered?

I've been waiting on Anthony's CD for about two months now. I first heard his music on VH1 Soul videos. I was so entralled with "Coming Where I'm Coming From", that I stopped right in my tracks to listen and watch and I couldn't wait until the end so I could find out this man's name. He puts so much passion and heart into his songs. You watch that video and you can 'feel' his pain, 'see' his sorrow and you wish that all of his heartache would go away.

That's how it feels when you listen to his CD. It's obvious that Anthony is an every day, down south brotha from North Carolina. If you are from a small Southern town, his style will remind you of the local guy from your hometown who has a strong, bluesy voice and is always singing at local events like weddings and class reunions, but works at the local paper mill instead of working on a recording contract. That's not a bad thing. All I'm saying is that the things Anthony is singing about are so believeable, so real. He's is the REAL deal. He doesn't look like your typical 'star'and that's fine because he looks like the brothas I grew up with...hard-working just trying to make ends meet without getting in trouble.

Please don't put him in that neo-soul category. That would be a very shallow comparison. Anthony is 'old-school', plain and simple. He's singing about lost loves and misunderstandings, hard times and great memories of his mom. But, mainly it's about love. It's not sappy and mushy...it's just real. For example, peep these lyrics from one of my favorite songs on the CD called, "I'm a Mess". He puts his entire soul into this song and you think that the woman just left him that morning right before he recorded the song. It's a slow song, with a churchy-bluesy feel.

"I'm so torn up, can't believe I lost you, lost my best friend, my soul mate, can't believe it's true...we've invested in a set of twins, a small house, and the dog cried out...knew I was suffering, he was chained to my pain...We were born to live and die together and now ya gone and I'm so alone, baby come on home...I'm a mess right now, can't eat, can't sleep, bill are pilling high, ain't worked in three weeks."

All of his lyrics make you feel what he's feeling. You know it's bad when the dog can feel your pain!

He also sings about a lost love named "Charlene", "Better Days", "Cornbread, Fish and Greens" and "Mama Knew Love". He's not asking us to feel sorry for him in these songs, he just wants us to understand where he's coming from, which is exactly what he's saying in the song that's out now, "Coming Where I'm Coming From". I'm so glad that Jermaine Dupri and SoSo Def allowed Anthony to be himself and not some Hollywood version of himself.

Some folks just have to compare singers to each other, but I'm not sure if I know who to compare him to and still do him justice. He sounds like an old blues singer with some new-school beats mixed in. In "I Tried" you get a little bit of an organ feel and one point I thought I was in church because I hear a few cords from old-school church hymns.

If you don't get this CD, you will be missing out. Everyone will be talking about it, so you might as well get it now. My only complaint is that I wish there was a song on there that shows him conquering love...all but three (four if you count "Coming Where I'm Coming From" talk about something other than his failed relationships. He seems so sincere to want to make a relationship work that I'd like to know if he's ever been happy in love. But, that's my only complaint...that and I wish there were more than 12 songs on the CD.

If you like Angie Stone, D'Angelo, Teddy Pendergrass and all those in that genre, go get it. Don't expect a Maxwell CD that you can play when you are trying to get your romance on...this ain't that kind of CD. However, if you are trying to communicate to your ex or to friends just how bad you've been hurt, but can't find the right words...then pick this CD up. But, it's not a depressing CD...it's just real.
