Music Review: Complete and outstanding
Rating: 5 Stars
The five CD package of all Scott Joplin's ragtime tunes, plus excerpts from his opera, Tremonisha, delivers the goods. Richard Zimmerman's playing is, to my untrained but appreciative ear, appropriately nuanced to the various moods Joplin created in his ragtime pieces. Now that this truly American style (formed from a blend of black music and rhythms with European dances and marches) has reached the popularity it deserves, we can be thankful that so many talented artists have recorded it. The LaserLight set of discs belongs with the best recordings. A quibble: some info about the pianist, and more of the excellent but too brief liner notes (by an unnamed critic) would have been welcome.
