Music Review: great as usual

Anonymous 4 always sounds great, including on this CD. This CD appears to have a good balance of songs in major vs. minor chords. The Cherry Tree carol is one that I don't always care for, b/c I find the storyline a little hokey ;), but I like this performance of it a lot. I have to admit that I think of Newell - Tydings Trew partly as a song to our cat. My husband and I have a cat named Gabrielle, which is how the name Gabriel is pronounced. After my husband heard this song, he said, play the song about the "angel Gabrielle," and that is what the song is now (in)famous for. Sometimes we think she recognizes her name. I don't mean to detract from the sacred meaning but there are not many songs that our cat resonates with. :)
My favorite song on the CD is Lullay my child - This ender nithgt. It makes me think that singing lullabies to children is probably common to most or all human societies. It would be nice if musicians from all over the world could record albums of lullabies representing different musical traditions. Including musicians from countries that are not at peace with each other. It might be compelling to hear lullabies with enough specificity to be comforting to children from specific cultures, but enough universality so that everyone could listen. When I hear this song I hear more than 'please go to sleep.' I hear longing in the singer's voice, that the world would be better, as reflected in the "weep no more" lyrics. It's hard not to dream of peace while listening to this song. The minor chord shows the emotional impact these (as yet unrealized) dreams can have. There are some songs that make me hear the desire for peace and for an end to suffering for children and this song is one of them. (Note: after looking I saw there is a website that describes a European Union project that collected 35 lullabies in 7 languages, using the title of Languages from the Cradle.)
Many musicians have linked a desire for peace particularly strongly with the Christmas season, and the events described in the Nativity. Anonymous 4 has several albums that are more in-depth regarding the Christmas music of different cultures, but this CD is a good sample of holiday music that is not as unusual as some of their other work.

Back in the studio after a four year hiatus Anonymous 4 returns withThe Cherry Tree an instant holiday music classic featuring medieval
English carols and Anglo-American spiritual songs. It is the
eighteenth original recording for the renowned vocal ensemble and
their first since 2006 s Gloryland which debuted at number three on
the Billboard classical chart. Anonymous 4 has been a perennial
presence on Billboard s Top Classical Albums chart and hit number one
with their folk-inspired American Angels in 2004. The Cherry Tree is
named after the miracle ballad of Joseph and Mary, the earliest text
of which survives from a Coventry Play from around 1400. The 'Cherry
Tree' story persisted in many forms, making its way into medieval
British carols of the mid-15th century and into British and American
traditional ballads. In it, Joseph doubts the divine origin of Mary s
pregnancy only to hear Jesus speak from within Mary s womb, causing a
cherry tree to bend its branches and offer his mother its fruit. The
2011-12 season marks Anonymous 4's 25th anniversary and the group will
be on tour in the US this fall.
