Music reviews of Annie Get Your Gun - Studio Cast album

Music Review: You'll say "it's wonderful..."
Rating: 5 Stars

Columbia originally released this album in the early 60's when Doris Day was at the peak of her career as the world's number one box-office star. Robert Goulet was fresh from his Broadway triumph as Lancelot in "Camelot" and since both artists were recording for Columbia, it seemed a natural that they would team.
Irving Berlin's "Annie Get Your Gun" was already, at the time, a classic American musical. Ethel Merman had originated the role in 1946 and made it her own. She recreated it again in 1966 and although pushing 60, somehow made it work. It had been turned into a successful musical for MGM in 1950 although frankly I don't care for the film. Judy Garland had originally been set to star and when she was unable to complete her obligation, the studio borrowed Betty Hutton from Paramount. Hutton was a gifted performer but I have always felt her Annie was played as though to the third balcony. She and co-star Howard Keel lacked chemistry in my opinion. Had MGM been successful in borrowing Miss Day (one of several potential replacements for Garland including Ginger Rogers and Betty Garrett), it might have been an all-time classic.
That being said, this wonderful 1963 recording allows the listener to imagine what the film might have been like. It's been beautifully remastered. The sound quality is amazing, the orchestrations so rich and full, and the two stars bring their own distinctive talents to the fore. It's a great listening experience.
The whole show is here, from overture to the finale. The only missing element for some more recent fans of the show is "Old Fashioned Wedding" a number Mr. Berlin introduced into the show for the 1966 revival and which has been with it ever since. I would love to hear Miss Day and Mr. Goulet's take on that number.
Nevertheless, this is a wonderful treat. Goulet is in fine form singing "My Defenses are Down" and "The Girl That I Marry" with his rich and fine baritone. Miss Day is a joy rendering "Doin What Comes Naturally", "You Can't Get a Man With a Gun" and gives the ultimate romantic take on the beautiful, "I Got Lost in His Arms". The feeling she brings to this song is astoundingly intimate, personal and dreamily romantic. A masterful number. As good as that is, however, she tops herself with "Moonshine Lullaby", making this song, which many may not be familiar with, distinctly her own. Give it a listen and you'll never doubt Miss Day's prowess as a brilliant singer. It'll haunt you.
The two stars join forces for the fun, "Anything You Can Do" and bring great emotion to the haunting, "They Say It's Wonderful". Although they reportedly recorded their individual vocals 3,000 miles apart, you'd swear they were looking into one another's eyes and singing with their heart, so real are the emotions they envoke.
The classic "There's No Business Like Show Business" concludes the album and sums up, perfectly the magic of show business that this treasure creates. Tis a pity the pair didn't reteam to do an album of music from "South Pacific", but this album certainly will provide many an enchanted evening.
