Music Review: The worst b-minor mass by a professional ensemble on record

I don't know what London/Decca was thinking when they produced this - perhaps the idea Solti sells. Maybe there is some great European telepathic connection to the master with a deep understanding of the inner spiritual being of...well it just sounds bad.
Yes, I know the early music movement has accustomed our ears to a much more convincing sound in this repertoire; yet, I have heard modern groups produce stylish and enjoyable concerts. This is the musical equivalent of a bus with a tenured bus driver. Everything is wrong. The strings are wobbly. The flutes are shrill. The brass overbalances. At least they could have gotten some excitement by not performing everything half tempo.
I've never quite understood chorus director Margaret Hillis's fame. Perhaps it's just the fact she had a high profile job, and in other minds, that means she must be good, shouldn't she? Well, if you pay the chorus, it will sound better than, well, every other chorus. Whose fault is that?
That said, we don't need five choruses. Mobs in front of the Brandenburg gate have had more clarity. I understand Hillis was a chain smoker. She trained her chorus well.
And then there is the tenor. I don't know how they could put that in front of an audience of paying adults. I've had more enjoyment hearing roosters hung upside down then having their heads cut off. It doesn't help to have some metallic clanging from a cylindrical pipe left over salvaged from the plumbing of an imploded building in support. Yes, I know you're supposed to play that way---in Ravel et. al.
This recording's only saving grace are the two soprano soloists.
