Music Review: More Than Meets the Eye

If you're a fan of Angelo Badalamenti, as I am, you'll recognize most of the tracks in this collection. You'll notice that there are some that haven't appeared on his previous CDS -- the Suite from IN THE ACTOR'S STUDIO, the Barcelona Olympic theme (The Flaming Arrow) and a piece called Snapshot from Prague.
What you won't know, thanks to the lack of liner notes, is that some of the "old" pieces are actually new. The themes from TWIN PEAKS (which was probably most people's introduction to Badalamenti, if they hadn't seen/heard BLUE VELVET) are more richly scored -- for a 76-piece orchestra -- than they were for the cult TV series itself or the soundtrack CD. That makes for a more intense emotional experience. Likewise, the theme for MULHOLLAND DRIVE has added parts for tuba and trombone, plus what Badalamenti calls "descending bass lines, to accentuate more of the original concept, of composing the theme, with Russian influence." And other pieces from other movies and TV shows have been rearranged as suites, as with A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT.
"Snapshot from Prague," incidentally, was inspired by a photo David Lynch had taken of the "empty. moody" recording studio in Prague, where they had gone to record the score for MULHOLLAND DRIVE with the city orchestra -- Badalamenti, with Lynch or other directors, went to Prague several times for scoring sessions. And it was originally commissioned as a string quartet by Elements String Quartet at Lincoln Center. Here it comes more richly orchestrated, and very emotional - like all his music in a classical vein. Nearly all his music here is on the classocal side, from BLUE VELVET to the Olympic theme. Badalamenti's right up there with two other film and TV composers with Italian names -- Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone -- only he was raised in Brooklyn instead of Rome. Still, he captures an authentic Italian rather than Russian flavor for THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS.
The man is versatile, but not just versatile. He's good, really good. But more than good. Enchanting. Mesmerizing. You'll have his music here running through your head even when you're not listening to it on the CD or mp3 player.
