Music reviews of Andrew Lloyd Webber 60

Music Review: A WORTHY COMPILATION TO MARK THE BIG 6
Rating: 5 Stars

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White') are not the best, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest and most talented composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". So far we had one big compilation called `Now and Forever', which featured the most memorable tunes from his shows until then (2001) on 3 discs, a fourth disc with some of the songs sung by other artists and a fifth one with rare and previously unreleased material. All this was neatly packed in a book with beautiful pictures and accompanying text. Thusly, it remains the most comprehensive one so far.

Yet this new compilation is also a winner. It was released to mark the composer's 60th birthday this year and as the title suggests, it has 60 songs on 3 discs. There are several things that make this particular compilation worth having. Firstly, it covers a wider range of material, including the songs from his latest musical `The Woman in White' and the revamped `Tell me on a Sunday'. Secondly, it features some of the artists that only recently became popular by singing ALW's songs, being in his reality TV shows or just giving a good rendition on special occasions (Connie Fisher, Lee Mead, Andrea Ross, Anastacia's powerful take on `Superstar' during the 2007 Concert for Diana in London, Bryn Terfel, John Barrowman, Elena Roger...). Also, the compilation showcases some of the voices from the past that just didn't make it to the previous ones (Jose Carreras's charming solo in `Half a moment'; Shirley Bassey with `The last man in my life'...).

That is not to say that the gold stars and songs from the past are overlooked. Michael Ball, Patti LuPone, Michael Crawford, Elaine Paige, Murray Head, Sarah Brightman, Barbra Streisand, Elvis Presley none the less, Madonna and many others shine with their powerful, well-known and unique interpretations of Lloyd Webber's gems.

The fans will undoubtedly find some remarks regarding some of the track choices and artists represented (Barbra Streisand's rendition of `Memory' seems surplus, since we already have Elaine Paige's ultimate take on the song on disc 1 and some other artist might have been a better choice - Barry Manilow's version, for example), but this is only a minor flaw. The sound does seem a bit uneven with the tracks from the recordings that haven't been remastered so far.

The CDs are neatly packed in 3 separate jewel cases and a cardboard case. The logo on the packaging is wonderfully designed as it shows the logos of all ALW shows, minus `By Jeeves', which is not omitted from the discs however. The accompanying booklet has a track list with credits together with several photographs of ALW during various stages of his life.

If anything, this compilation yet again proves the diversity of ALW's work, plus it enhances his position as one of the few composers of our time who has been working with such a vide variety of artists ranging from pop, opera, musical theatre etc. It only shows that his music doesn't age, despite the fact its composer does.

In the end, this might be a good beginner's introduction to ALW's music, a welcomed addition to your existing collection and a perfect gift for any ALW fan.
