Music Review: delicate and beautiful.

Bird is virtually peerless; he weaves intelligent, thoughtful, complicated lyrics into sophisticated, layered, mature compositions that tower over the works of his contemporaries. He is in top form here. He veers from ethereal ("First Song") to creepy ("I") to understatedly gorgeous ("Lull") without missing a step. The title track is truly extraordinary, with a swirling musical ambiance that encircles the listener and makes the lyrical content palpable in an almost physical way. The final track pulls melodies from "Lull" and Bird's pensive, yearning take on the Handsome Family's "Don't Be Scared," making the album function as a cohesive musical statement, instead of just a collection of separate songs.

"Weather Systems"' only missteps are the two instrumental tracks in the middle of the album. They drone on a little too long, and sound a little too similar. They feel like filler.

Overall, "Weather Systems" is a sweepingly beautiful, intimate, highly original album from one of the most gifted and innovative musicians around.
