Music Review: Broadway Baby Hits a Homer

A rising star on Broadway (she is currently performing as Daniela, the beauty-shop owner, in the Tony-winning "In the Heights"), Andrea Burns is the real thing -- a singing actress with great pipes and a warm, winning personal style. Already featured on several cast albums (besides "In the Heights," In The Heights (Original Broadway Cast Recording)Sondheim's "Saturday Night," Saturday Night (2000 Off-Broadway Revival Cast)Kay Swift's "Fine and Dandy," Fine and Dandy (2004 Studio Cast) (World Premiere Recording)[[Jason Robert Brown's "Songs for a New World"Songs For A New World (1996 Original New York Cast)), Burns steps out on this solo album as a singer of range and depth. From the come-hither comedy of "A Little Brains, a Little Talent" from "Damn Yankees" to the rueful introspection of John Bucchino's "Love Quiz," Burns's debut solo album showcases her talent in twelve songs ranging from classic Broadway of the 1950s to the complex art songs of today's musical theater composers. Most prominently, she features the songs of her musical arranger Steve Marzullo, whose "Through the Eyes of Grace" is a perfect short story about marriage and aging. Though the lyrics are clear in the well-recorded sound (she is backed by a small studio orchestra), it would have been helpful for the producers to have included a lyric sheet in the accompanying booklet as well as a little more bio information about Burns herself. She needs to be introduced to a wider public.
