Music Review: Still Listened to in 50 Years

Upon hearing that Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli had released a Christmas album, I was thrilled. I've long been a fan of Bocelli's music, and thought his voice would be gorgeous against the backdrop of classical holiday songs. And while Andrea himself is tremendous as always, "My Christmas" doesn't quite live up to my expectations.

On many of the tracks here, Andrea Bocelli sounds magnificent; sacred songs like 'Adeste Fidelis' and 'The Lord's Prayer' are reminiscent of his Italian-language masterpieces. Other classical tracks, like 'White Christmas', 'What Child is This?' and 'The Christmas Song' are also enhanced by his vocals. If the entire album were a collection of sacred pieces and classical standards, I would be thrilled. But sadly, this isn't the case.

Producer David Foster said that this album was meant for the entire family to enjoy. That is the only explanation I can find for songs like 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' and 'Jingle Bells', the latter of which is a duet with the Muppets. Yes, the Muppets. Some modern songs Bocelli is capable of pulling off - 'Blue Christmas' is one such song. However, there is just something awkward in the children's songs. Not that he doesn't sing well, but the effort of making him more mainstream seems almost forced.

The last four songs are, without a doubt, the album's best. 'Cantique de Noel', the original French version of 'O Holy Night', is gorgeous if a bit different being sung in its native language. And it's nice to see a David Foster arrangement that is different from the one he used first for Celine Dion and then re-used for Josh Groban. 'Caro Gesu Bambino' is a gentle Italian Christmas song that simply shines in its simplicity. And modern songs 'I Believe' and 'God Bless Us Everyone' (the theme song to Disney's "A Christmas Carol") are both wonderful. Though they're new songs, they are more classical in flavor and therefore work well with Bocelli's vocals.

It's difficult not to compare this Foster-produced Christmas album to the last similar one he did, Josh Groban's "Noel". Unfortunately, this one isn't quite as good as Groban's 2007 holiday release. If Bocelli had stuck to what he does best - more traditional, classical arrangements and song choices - this would probably have surpassed "Noel"; after all, Bocelli does have the stronger voice of the two. But the attempt at making this a more family-oriented album has destroyed its perfection. Will it still be listened to in fifty years? Probably. It's just not as great as it could have been.
