Music Review: A wonderful recording, and great selections

This is one of my favorite recordings of French Baroque music. Works by the very best of the time:Lully,Marseille, Campra,Mouret(and not the masterpiece theater piece) Mondonville, and Rameau. From an aria in Spanish, ("El esperar en amor) to a 'pastorale languedocienne' in the Gascon dialect of southern France, this recording goes in all aspects beyond what most recordings of French Baroque music have gone. Mr. Reyne does a very outstanding job, and the same I say about soprano Francoise Masset, she sings with the charm and exellence that this music requires, indeed a five-star recording.
Description of Musiques aux Etats du Languedoc
French baroque music is an acquired taste; it helps if you think of yourself as French royalty while you're listening, but it's not necessary. It is characterized by a certain ceremonial air, wild chromaticism, highly colorful scoring, with prominent percussion and high wind parts, asymmetrical line lengths, dissonances that are quickly resolved but still stay in your bones, and, more often than not, great dance rhythms. The hour of music on this CD is a perfect introduction to the French baroque, as it offers bits of music by virtually all of the important composers of the era. Lully and Rameau are here, opening and closing the CD, respectively; with music--some dance movements, some arias--by Campra, the almost unknown Gautier de Marseille, Mouret (so wonderful at composing Masterpiece Theatre-type flourishes) and Mondonville (who was by far the most popular composer of his time). Arias, all of them short, are sung by soprano Fran?oise Masset, who has a bit of acid in her voice, which is most welcome. The playing by La Simphonie de Marais is crisp, spicy, and clean, on period instruments under Hugo Reyne's direction. If you want to hear what caused the French Revolution, it's all here--and much of it is so catchy that you might just be reaching for your powdered wig and staff, too.
