Music reviews of "An Afternoon In Austin"

Music Review: A Snooze in Austin
Rating: 2 Stars

I bought this CD after hearing some work by pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn on the radio and being really impressed by it. Didn't know much about the CD, but there was a pretty limited selection of her work available for purchase. And ... I have a serious case of buyer regret. The CD consists of 8 songs featuring Alcorn and improvisionational artist Eugene Chadbourne, recorded in one day in an informal studio in Austin. There are a few covers, including a pretty good rendition of Mickey Newbury's "How I Love Them Old Songs," as well as an 11+ minute Merle Haggard cover that meanders, dawdles, nearly stops at times, and ultimately makes you feel like slitting your wrists. The next song is a 17-minute improvisation, and the final two numbers both clock in at around 13 minutes and will bore you to death. I have nothing against improv music, but couldn't the artists have listened to this and said to each other, "Boy, we really didn't nail it at all! Maybe we should do it again tomorrow?"
In short, I was really surprised by how uninspired and amateurish this sounded. Hopefully I'll find something better by Susan Alcorn at some point.
