Music reviews of Amos Lee

Music Review: Soul food for an artist's frame of mind...
Rating: 5 Stars

Amos Lee is an incredible artist, and on his debut cd, you will find yourself enjoying every single song as a piece of work in it's own right. It is rare that I enjoy every song on a CD... in fact, I can only think of two off the top of my head.

Amos Lee certainly has that soul soothing tone and style that Norah Jones has. Intelligent lyrics tell a story, with stripped down music that is very reminiscent of James Taylor (another favorite of mine). I also find myself comparing him to Ben Harper in some of the more somber songs where the richness of his tone will have your heart breaking, as if melancholy could be captured in a song.

"Arms of a Woman" is one of my favorites, (and seemed to be a favorite of the crowd when I saw him live) and will reach deep inside of you and pull out the ache of every lost love you've had. Every word is perfectly placed, every note a perfect harmony. If you have an inkling of a musician in you, you will appreciate the composition of this one. "Keep it loose, keep it tight" is reminscent of that Philly style (think G. Love, Jack Johnson) and shows his Philly roots, funky and upbeat, but in a subtle way that will keep you in the groove of the rest of the cd. "Seen It All Before" is another favorite of mine, and you will find yourself relating to this melancholy tune of a heart done wrong (think a young, modern Louis Armstrong). This song, more than any other, I found myself playing over and over, crooning into my steering wheel as every blighted relationship relived itself in Mr. Lee's sorrowful song in which he reminds that mysterious her that "I ain't gonna be your fool, baby, anymore". "Give It Up" is a more folksy, upbeat song, as is "Bottom of the Barrel" (which was better live). "Dreamin" is definitely a tribute to old school blues (think BB and Lucille) and I love the way he uses his voice in this more than anything... take a listen and appreciate the tones and pitch changes. "Soul Suckers" seems to be an autobiographical piece on his views of the business. "Colors" is a little on the high pitched end of things for me, but when he did this live, I enjoyed it much more. "Black River" is absolutely a song to lay in the dark and just feel yourself releasing to... you can't listen to this song and not feel your stress level physically decreasing. "Love in the Lies" is a more upbeat song, relating "The world ain't no harder than it ever been" which I myself find a very comforting thought. To wrap up the album, "All My Friends" is a great closing mellow piece in tribute to his friends.

All in all, this is an absolutely fantastic album. I was lucky enough to find tickets to see him live in a small venue shortly after I discovered his album. I was right next to the stage, and had the privelege of experiencing him live. His voice is fantastic live, the richness comes across slightly more raw and deep; his unassuming stage presence is a breath of fresh air, and the emotion with which he delivers these songs is incredible. I would also add that some of the songs he performed that weren't on the album were incredible, and I can't wait until the next album is released. Do yourself a favor, and at least take a listen. You won't be sorry.

Description of Amos Lee

With a dusky soul voice and a knack for literate, thoughtful lyrics, singer/songwriter Amos Lee is a throwback to a more organic-sounding pop time period - he's like a mix of Bill Withers, Arthur Lee, and James Taylor. Produced by Norah Jones band member Lee Alexander.
Though Amos Lee's music is frequently described as a fusion of folk and soul, such an equation fails to reflect the singular artistry of this impressive debut. Like labelmate Norah Jones (who guests on two cuts), the Philadelphia singer-songwriter recognizes the power of simplicity, distilling an emotional essence that cuts across categories. The opening of his "Seen It All Before" echoes Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"; the stunning "Arms of a Woman" channels Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams to Remember"; "Give It Up" cuts a classic Bill Withers groove; "Black River" has the sound of an age-old spiritual; and the closing "All My Friends" follows Van Morrison into the mystic. Throughout the song cycle, the bare-bones arrangements behind Lee's vocal flutter reinforce an organic unity that transcends genre. For all of the debts he owes to the music of the 1960s and '70s, the results sound timeless rather than retro. In his cautionary "Soul Suckers," Lee sings that "nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world"--and proceeds to prove it. --Don McLeese
