Music Review: Melodic Death Metal Classic

Melodic Death Metal is one of my favorite genres, especially Swedish Melodic Death, you know bands like In Flames, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Soilwork, At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Scar Symmetry, and most recently Amon Amarth. I went out and bought "With Oden on Our Side" at Best Buy down in Eau Claire over the summer, and I fell in love with it. This album is an epic, brutal, headbanging, modern melodic death metal masterpiece that will take you on an epic journey and take your breath away. It's also become one of my favorite death metal albums I've been listening to lately. I listen to this album constantly every week as well. I remember hearing both "Cry of the Black Birds" and "Runes to My Memory" (which are of course on this album) on Music Choice Metal, and I was instantly hooked to Amon Amarth. I've also recently watched the music videos for both songs on YouTube as well, and they're both great. Amon Amarth are a death metal band that play a style called "viking metal" because their lyrics and songs are based upon the viking age, Norse Mythology, battles of honor and glory, etc. The production by Jens Bogren is crisp and clean, and the musicianship is top notch. Johan Hegg has great death growls that are brutal, gruff, commanding, and intellegible, and you can also understand what he's saying as well. The guitarwork by Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Soderberg is flat out awesome. The riffs are heavy and brutal, yet very melodic at times, and the leads, harmonies, and solos are very melodic and great to hum along to. Ted Lundstrom provides some nice strong basslines throughout, and Fredrik Andersson's drumming is fantastic as well, and he's also does alot of great double bass kicking too. Every song on this album is excellent and downright addicting. One of my favorites on here "Valhal Awaits Me" features monster fast thrashing riffs, straight ahead pummeling, thrashing, double bass drumming, catchy hum along leads, great growling vocals, and an addicting guitar solo as well. Words can't even describe how much I love this song. The next song "Runes to My Memory" is an epic mid tempoish headbanger which is highlighted by hefty, powerful, headbanging worthy riffs, marching, stomping drum beats with more great double bass added, soaring guitar harmonies, and a memorable chorus, while track three "Asator" is a straight ahead thrashing speed burner which features more charging skin pounding and rapid double bass kicking, surging riffs as well as a great wild, careening solo. Another heavy favorite of mine, track seven "Cry of the Black Birds" is highlighted by memorable, addicting, melodic guitar riffing and harmonies, along with more straight ahead thrashing double bass drumming, and commanding growling vocals from Johan. "Under the Northern Star" is a slower yet catchy melodic number that features tasty melodic guitar leads as well as a beautiful majestic guitar solo at 2:45, I love it. "Gods of War Arise" and album closer "Prediction of Warfare" are both longer, epic, powerful headbanging classics as well (with the former clocking in at 6:02 and includes another nice soaring melodic solo around 3:56, and the latter track clocking in at 6:38) Please read on for the song ratings.

The bottom line is that "With Oden on Our Side" is an absolute must have for any fan of Amom Amarth, viking metal, death metal, melodic death metal, or if you're just a fan of metal period. Even fans of thrash metal and black metal will enjoy this as well. If you never even heard this album before, then you are truly missing out on a brilliant modern melodic death metal masterpiece that is known as Amon Amarth's "With Oden on Our Side". Buy this album ASAP!!
