Music Review: WOW! OUT OF THE PARK!

I don't care if you're a purist with the thought that the ABB were only good when Duane was alive or when Dickey Betts was in the band - this album recaptures the true spirit of the ABB when they were young and hungry during the early 70's. It's as good as 'Eat A Peach' or 'Brothers And Sisters'. I actually find it a bit spooky that Derek Trucks reminds me so much of Duane. It's like part of Duane reincarnated in Derek or he channels him from the great beyond. Whatever it is - it's damn good. Warren Haynes chops are in top shape too. These two guys play extremely well off of each other. One suggestion would be that they do more harmony guitar parts - like those in 'Jessica' or 'Ramblin' Man' for instance. That is an essential part of the ABB sound that seems to have been overlooked a bit. 'Desdamona' is a hauntingly beautiful piece of work and I love the jazzy, Vanmorrison-ish 'Moondance' break-down jam; it totally rocks. I saw some this material being performed on a Beacon show DVD and it was just as good live if not better than the studio recordings. The ABB have always been at their best live and this tradition continues forth. Go and see them in New York at the Beacon Theatre - they usually play there for a few weeks every Spring.

Very rarely is a legendary band able to come up with new, credible material. Jam band progenitors the Allman Brothers have done better than that, tapping into some of the spark that made them one of the most influential American bands of their time. The lineup has changed due to tragedy, discontent, and plain orneriness, but the band is still able to conjure up dark tales of thwarted romance, dashed ambitions, and enduring friendship and tether them to freefalling slide riffs, jazzy interludes, and soulful blues that have been staples of the band since 1969. Granted, some of the guitar solos aren't an heroic as they were when Dickey Betts in the fold, but the ballad "Desdamona" is as inspired as "Melissa," and Gregg Allman's singing has never been better. --Jaan UhelszkiGeneral CDs
