Music Review: Possibly Allman's Best

I can truly say, for the past two years this album and one other have been the only ones to grace my cd player at work, and I just never get tired of it. As a long time ABB fan (and cover band musician doing their stuff since the late 70s) I can't think of anything since 'Brother's' that has been able to create a mood and groove on the first song and not lose it throughout the album. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks replicate and even surpass the early chemistry the classic lineup had, and create just the most incredible buttery bluesy guitar tones and melodic sweet spots every time. Desdemona just replaced Stormy Monday for me... and Firing Line's creamy slide riffs are like melted butter. Dang. Just buy the album or download an mp3 of any one of the songs - hearing is much better than my pointless review here. I even dare say I haven't listened to Fillmore or Peach since buying this album.

Very rarely is a legendary band able to come up with new, credible material. Jam band progenitors the Allman Brothers have done better than that, tapping into some of the spark that made them one of the most influential American bands of their time. The lineup has changed due to tragedy, discontent, and plain orneriness, but the band is still able to conjure up dark tales of thwarted romance, dashed ambitions, and enduring friendship and tether them to freefalling slide riffs, jazzy interludes, and soulful blues that have been staples of the band since 1969. Granted, some of the guitar solos aren't an heroic as they were when Dickey Betts in the fold, but the ballad "Desdamona" is as inspired as "Melissa," and Gregg Allman's singing has never been better. --Jaan UhelszkiGeneral CDs
