Music Review: Holdsworth's trio plus vocals

I read that this was an album project that was never finished, and some of the tracks were released as an EP. It was an attempt to win Holdsworth a wider audience by moving his sound a little more toward the mainstream, by adding vocals from former Cream member Jack Bruce.
Holdsworth's basic formula is not changed from many of his other recordings. The basic unit seems to be a trio of guitar - drums - bass. The vocal numbers here have a simpler and more identifiable melody than most Allan Holdsworth songs. The drums are very clean and dynamic -- and busy. I can't say a lot about the vocals. They're not bad at all, but they don't really distinguish themselves, either.
Most people will be interested in this for Allan Holdsworth's fancy fretwork. That is spotlighted here, but not as much as his other albums. Again, the goal was apparently to have a more balanced and mainstream sound.
I have a Holdsworth album titled SAND, which seems to be more lyrical and melodic than some of his other work. Although SAND is better than ROAD GAMES, neither one is as frenetic and envelope-pushing as some of Allan's other albums. ROAD GAMES is pretty to listen to, and the guitar playing -- synth guitar or standard electric guitar -- is amazing as always. I don't see how it could be called an essential Holdsworth album, though. For dedicated fans, it will have some appeal. The highlights for me were Tokyo Dream and Three Sheets To The Wind, both of which were non-vocal tracks.
Whatever its charms may be, the price of the new import seems hard to justify, except for the hardcore Holdsworth aficionados.
