Fighting the demons that plague most rock n' roll bands; Alice In Chains released their third long player late in 1995. This eponymous LP could be seen as one of the last important grunge discs although AIC were among the heaviest metal that the grunge movement ever produced. Lanye Staley's heroin addiction was hurting the band but to their credit (and perhaps detriment) Jerry Cantrell stayed with his talented but unpredictable front man though AIC would not tour in support of the album. `AIC' the record is as diverse as the group would ever be and proved to be their swan song as Staley would lose his battle with drugs within a decade. "Grind" was the defiant opener, lead single and received immediate airplay as the LP debuted at number one on the charts. However due to the lack of a tour the sales did not match previous highs. "Again", "Heaven Beside You" and "Over Now" were all blasting out of alternative rock radio stations throughout '96. The album featured slower epic building tracks like "Sludge Factory", crankers such as "Brush Away" and slower oddities like "Frogs". Maybe not for all tasted but `AIC' was a great way to end a legendary band's first act and a suitable way to bid farewell to another rock tragedy.
Music Review: The reason it went #1 Rating: 5 Stars
After listening to this extravagate album, I found out that this is a masterpiece. For people who believed that Dirt was their best album, they are totally wrong. Alice in Chains, also known as "Tripod," has it all. From the opening track "Grind," it shows that they are not afraid to mix in melodic with heavy riffs. The combination of Layne Staley's and Jerry Cantrell's vocals make it very creepy, yet soothing. Songs like "God Am," "Shame in You," "Frogs," and "Over Now," prove that Alice should keep on writing and creating new albums. Other critics believe that "Tripod" isn't as good as "Dirt." It can't get any better than "Tripod." This album is much more sophisticated and well crafted. If they can make pointless songs such as "Nothin' Song stick to your mouth like peanut butter on the brain," then they have done a heck of a job. If you are a regular Alice in Chains fan, then definitely get this album. If not, get "Dirt," "Jar of Flies," or "Unplugged" first because this is an album that takes a while to get into. It is very weird, but great.
Music Review: Alice In Chains Last Masterpiece!!!!!!! Rating: 5 Stars
These past days Ive been into Alice in Chains and I listened to every cd and we're to their last cd sefl titled. this in my opinion is Alice In Chains darkest album to date with songs like "Over Now", "Sludge Factory", "Again", and "Head Creeps" but with the brain behind the band Jerry Canrel on the guiar you can't loose buyin this album. The 1st single of the cd is "Again" which is an awesome song and very heavy taking them back to awesome songs like "Would?" and "Man In The Box". Lane Stayel's vocals are just haunting in all of his work. the 2nd single off the album is "Heaven Beside You" which is another awesome single from the mind of Jerry Cantrel. Heaven Beside You has an awesome chorus to it and the lyrics just rock. the 1st song off the album called "Grind" sounds like the song "Would?" and every other song is just awesome in Alice In Chains last masterpiece. If you love Alice In Chains I recomend you pick up their unplugged album or any other live albums b/c they are one of the best bands live and I've seen em. Alice In Chains Review: Takes a while to get into... Rating: 4 Stars
When I first bought this album I listened to it straight through, and I thought it was one of the worst albums I've ever heard, just because I found all the songs to be rather boring, and only listened to "Grind" and "Heaven Beside You." You sort of have to be patient with it for about 3 or so listens. Now that I've had it for a while I've pretty much listened to what every song has to offer and I find the album not to be perfect but very enjoyable and underrated. "Nothing Song" is probably the best on the disc. The whole disc is very dark and strange, they are very very talented artists and as always Jerry Cantrell's guitar playing is unbeatable, and both of them have to have some of the best singing voices in rock music. Each song is different and must be listened to carefully to truly appreciate, after that, you'll want to listen to ALMOST the whole record w/o skipping any tracks. Unfortunately, some songs, like "Sludge Factory","So Close",and "Brush away" are still rather boring, but with plenty more great ones on the disc at Amazon.com, it's a great deal. Good Record, AiC Rules!
Music Review: i can only hope it isn't their swan song Rating: 4 Stars
for first time Alice listeners, this album may seem a bit of a mess with it's densely layered vocals and often super-sludgey riffs. However, after more than one listen, even the untrianed ear can pick up on the incredible aristry of this band. Grind and Again were obvious choices for singles. some say that Sludge Factory and Frogs would be better short, however i think that Sludge Factory's probably the heaviest song on the album and wouldn't have the same impact if it was shorter. For those who have only listened to about a minute of Frogs and turned it off, listen to it all the way through, it's a really emotional and powerful tune. Heaven Beside You is the radio-friendly song but is still a good showcase for Cantrell's understated tenor vocals, as is the album epic Over Now. Head Creeps is classic trippy Staley song writing. God Am is good enough to be a single and Shame In You and So Close are weird but good. This leaves the crazily lyricised Nothin' Song, which i have been able to stomach even though most hate it with a passion. Overall, a great and ultra-heavy cd.
