Alice Cooper-Welcome To My Nightmare *****
The best part of Welcome To My Nightmare is that everyone refers to it as Alice's concept album as if Alice Cooper never made another concept album. One thing is for sure it is among his strongest concepts. It reveals around the main character Steven (who is really just Alice and would reappear many many times in Coopers career) and how is is trapped in a nightmare...but it might not be a nightmare and that is what makes the album constantly exciting.
What else is great is that this was Alice's first real solo album. This is where he met up with Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter, two of the most criminally underrated and forgotten guitar players in the history of the game.
Featuring such classics as the totally unlike Alice Cooper title track 'Welcome To My Nightmare' which is easily among his top five tracks ever. Featuring a great percussion section and a minimal amount of guitar making it sound nothing like Alice. 'Devils Food' is also one of Coopers greatest works containing clever word play and some killer riffing from Wagner. 'Only Women Bleed' was covered by Guns N' Roses and is concidered one of Coopers best and became one of his biggest singles. Far from a personal favorite for me though lets just say that. 'Department Of Youth' while a fantastic song and among the best on the album throws the whole feel off because it is the only track that doesn't follow the theme of the album or the story line. 'Cold Ethyl' is classic horror rock and 'Steven' is fantastic both lyrically and theatre wise. 'Escape' closes the album making it end almost as perfect as it began.
Alice would take a full scale Broadway cast with him to perform the album on tour including the great Richard Price for the narration. Welcome To My Nightmare is easily Coopers most adventurous album musically, lyrically, and production wise. It is also just one hell of a rock n' roll album
