Music Review: You Could Do Worse

Ali Ryerson is in the top rank of contemporary jazz flutists - of course that's not a very long list - particularly if you exclude players like Lew Tabackin for whom the flute is a "second instrument." Ms Ryerson has a lovely "shimmery silver" tone, almost perfect breath control and a sure touch. When it comes to technique, you can't get much better than Ms Ryerson. But....
Somebody once said that it's the journey, not the destination, that counts. Well maybe that's true in life, but at least for me, it's not true in jazz. For me, no matter how exciting and improvisational the journey may be, there's got to be a point, a final destination. When there is, you get jazz; when there isn't, you get new age, (and by the way, I'm not denigrating new age - I happen to like George Winston, Liz Story and their collegues). So without belaboring the point any further....
The problem with "In Her Own Sweet Way" is that almost all of the songs have a meandering, new age feel to them. That's particularly true of those composed by Ms Ryerson's "support group" - pianist Harold Danko, bassist Jeff Fuller and drummer Terry Clark - but it's also true of Ms Ryerson's renditions of such classics as Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way," and Miles Davis' "Blue in Green." As Gertrude Stein once famously, (and incorrectly), said of Oakland, CA, "There's no there there." The only time that Ms Ryerson and her combo take you on a journey that matters is in "Paisagem Cosmica," a song by Mr Fuller, and one that leaves you wanting to hear more. Unfortunately there's very little more in the album.
Ms Ryerson has said that the flute is a "beautiful instrument." She's right. And the danger in that is that a flutist can easily end up making beautiful music for the sake of beauty. That's not bad, but it's not very interesting.
As with almost all Concord Records albums, the sonics are excellent: Clean and precise, with a hint of warmth.
If you're coming to Ms Ryerson's music for the first time, (and if you are both a lover of jazz and the flute, you should certainly give her a listen), I recommend that you start with "Portraits in Silver." As for "In Her Own Sweet Way" - it's a pleasant way to spend an hour on a sunny afternoon. You could do a lot worse.
