Music Review: The ne plus ultra Digital Age Scriabin Recital

Yevgeny Sudbin was no more than 26 years old when he recorded what I would assert is the greatest Scriabin playing since the heyday of Horowitz. Granted, there has been some excellent Scriabin playing from Richter, Ashkenazy, Hamelin, Pogorelich, Glemser, Kissin and most recently a near-complete reference survey from Lettberg. However, in our digital age of CDs and SACDs et al, the rare combination of intensity and refinement that runs like a red thread through this Scriabin recital has no equal.

Scriabin's esoterically intricate music presents some of the most formidable challenges to performers and listeners alike. Sudbin, on the other hand, appears to closely identify with it: 'When I first became involved with Scriabin's music, Scriabin eclipsed everything in my life. The passion and curiosity for the music and the persona seemed self-nourishing and even destructive in its nature, almost like a type of lust, and wouldn't subside'--as he writes in his uncommonly perceptive and personal liner notes. Indeed, Sudbin's rendition of one of the greatest piano works in the entire repertoire, the Fifth Sonata, is nothing short of phenomenal in its sheer ecstasy. Even though this crucial element, lacking from so many accounts of this masterpiece, is very much present with Richter and Horowitz, none of them play with Sudbin's sense of discovery and brilliantly subtle tonal shadings.

The Second and Ninth Sonatas are also touched by distinction--especially the first movement of the former, which has never sounded more exotically seductive. But it is in the four Mazurkas from Op 10 where Sudbin yet again plays with a level of idiomatic insight and inspiration that outshine just about any imaginable rival. What he manages to do, which is no mere feat, is to conjure up a sound world that not only sounds post-Chopinian but even an extension (dare I say enhancement) of the genre Chopin essentially invented.

All the same, there is still room for saving the best for last--the Op 38 Valse in A-flat major, which is not only one of Scriabin's preeminent masterpieces but also the arguably greatest waltz composed for the piano: 'This piece is a magic box. Opened slowly, the intensifying, blinding light emitting from inside sets the universe ablaze just to vanish again at the end, leaving but a luscious trace'--and that is exactly how Sudbin plays it.

If my praise sounds exaggerated, I offer the following words of Bryce Morrison, who almost appears to be struggling to find big-enough superlatives: 'I should say that no pianist of any generation has, in my experience, captured Scriabin's volatility so vividly as Sudbin. [...] It is as if the music's very nerve ends are exposed to view and rarely have I heard a pianist prepared to take such risks on record. [...] All these performances are flecked with personal touches and brilliances above and beyond even Scriabin's wildest demands [...] This, put suitably euphorically, is a disc in a million.'

The demonstration-worthy sound, particularly in the SACD format, was caught in August 2006 at the Västerås Concert Hall--some 100 km West of Stockholm. Preceded by three very good to near-great Scarlatti, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky/Medtner discs, this Scriabin recital turned Sudbin into the most promising pianistic talent since Kissin.
