Music Review: Beautiful documentation of the liturgy

This CD presents a beautiful rendition of the Russian liturgy, as performed by Igumen Mitrofan and the Novospassky monks - some of the best singers, one presumes, the Russian church has to offer. The previous reviewer's comment on the liner notes is well taken - but then one does not buy a Naxos release expecting exhaustive notes; this is one of the sacrifices the budget label tends to make. The sound quality is also not as poor as that reviewer implies - the recording would certainly have benefited from production in a thickly reverberant church or cathedral, but it is warm nonetheless and the voices have power and blend well. The monks' version of the Cherubic Hymn (track 10) is worth the price of the recording alone. Definitely worth picking up if you have an interest in Russian church music.
