Music reviews of So Pure / I Was Hoping

Music Review: Morissette Confronts Pure Expression
Rating: 4 Stars

It's early 1997, your debut album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, you're an overnight sensation, a multi-Grammy award winning household name and expectations for a follow-up album have never been as high. So what do you do? Well, in the case of Alanis Morissette you pack your bags and take yourself off to India to seek out spiritual enlightenment - to 'find yourself' and come back refreshed. Yes, since that infamous and now legendary debut album "Jagged Little Pill" spoke the truth for a generation and spawned a million angst-ridden vixens, Alanis had to make an album that maintained her success and kept her alive in the public subconscious, didn't she? Well, maybe some people thought so, but she certainly didn't. To make an album as well-accepted on a social scale as Jagged Little Pill was going to be impossible, so Alanis laid down the law and, in the fall of 1998, unveiled "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" to the world. Typically, critics adored it but the public failed to agree. Yeah, so the album went to No.1 all over the world, but in the end only sold around 8 million copies worldwide. What is considered her most tragic album by the public is actually her greatest masterpiece by the diehard fans. I for one am in agreement of this album's genius.

"So Pure" was the third and final single to be released from the Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie album in the UK. It peaked at a dismal No.38 in July 1999 and spent just 2 weeks on the chart. I've only seen the video once, and that must have been almost five years ago! I remember Alanis in a really long dress and dancing around a room with a man. She jumps and dances all over the place, and that's all I can really remember.

So Pure begins with almost no beat or sound at all but Alanis' amazing voice in which she declares upon the first verse, "You from New York, you are so relevant. You reduce me to cosmic tears. Luminous more so than most anyone. Unapologetically alive, knot it my stomach, lump in my throat." This first verse is observational of Alanis' position, before an inevitable build up before the first chorus. In it she sings, "I love you when you dance, when you freestyle in trance. So pure such an expression." And that's it for the first chorus. This is a short, bittersweet song and even the choruses are brief! Alanis then sings the second verse, which starts off with the title of the album, "Supposed former infatuation junkie. I sink three pointers and you wax poetically." Alanis then sings the chorus once more before the bridge, the best part of the song, where she sings, "Let's grease the wheel over tea. Let's discuss things in confidence. Let's be outspoken, let's be ridiculous, let's solve the world's problems-lems-lems!" Alanis then sings the chorus twice more and drags the song out by wailing, "So pure!" before the song dies down and you can just hear her marvel, "Wow!"

So Pure was the third and final single to be taken from the Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie album, and it was a great way to round it off. The song is obviously the worst that was released of the three, and I use 'worst' in the lightest possible way. The song is amazing, but not up to the stands of its two predecessors. So Pure is less than three minutes long, it's cute, it's short, it's wild, it's a guilty pleasure.
