Music Review: Gaudi

Gaudi was the Project's tenth studio album & would be the last album of Project officially. It pales in comparison to their other efforts. Parsons & Woolfson would go their separate ways after this album. Woolfson would go on to do Broadway productions, you can hear some of that in this effort. Gaudi would peak at #57 on the charts & was the last Project album to chart. There weren't any singles that cracked into any form of a Billboard chart.
The album opens with "La Sagrada Familia" which contains much of what direction that Woolfson would later take. Shortly into the song a narrator translates the title & tells us that it was the name of a temple Gaudi designed & began to have constructed. To this day it has yet to be completed. "Too Late" is somewhat more in the usual Project vein though it's not to be confused with their better efforts. There's a very tasteful sax solo within it. "Closer to Heaven" follows & slows the pace. This song is a harbinger of the songs on The Time Machine though not near as good as what's on that album. "Closer to Heaven" does have one of Bairnson's most melodic solos. The lead vocal on this song is Woolfson & probably the first time that I felt his voice wasn't appropriate for the song, it's just not strong enough. "Standing on Higher Ground" in it's opening is reminiscent of Pyramid until the vocals begin. It's a mid-tempo song that has Geoff Barradale doing his debut vocal on a Project effort. This is one of the better songs on the album but it's not great. It stands out only because so many of the other songs are sub-par. "Money Talks" is the first song on the album that has any power in it. It's also the first song on the album that allows Bairnson to do an exceptional solo proving why he's one of the most sought after session men in Great Britain. "Inside Looking Out" is NOT to be confused with the Grand Funk song of the same name. This is a slow song & doesn't feel like he has any similarity to much of the album. Lyrically it does a good job of stating how Gaudi had become so isolated in his life. The last third is very mellow & will remind you of Pink Floyd with the spoken word parts that aren't distinguishable. The last song on the original release is "Paseo de Gracia" & is the only instrumental. In my mind, this is the best song on the album. It's mellow also but Bairnson's acoustic lead really brings out the Spanish flavor of the song, somewhat flamenco. It's definitely closer to the Project's other & better efforts. Bairnson also does an electric solo more in the vein of classic Project instrumentals.
There are seven bonus tracks on this remastered version. The first is "Too Late" that has Woolfson doing a rough guide vocal. This was especially typical in the early stages of Project songs. There aren't any lyrics in this version, just Woolfson singing syllables. "Standing on Higher Ground/Losing Proposition" which is listed as a vocal experiment & is much shorter than the final version that appeared on the original release. Once again, it's mostly Woolfson scat singing though the refrain's lyrics are in place that features Chris Rainbow doing the background vocals. I don't really get where the "Losing Proposition" part comes in. "Money Talks" gives us a featured, but short (0:37), Chris Rainbow vocal overdub. Next is another version of "Money Talks" that's listed as a backing track rough mix. All this means is the track hadn't been finalizes & the vocals are near nonexistent. "Closer to Heaven" is listed as a sax/Chris Rainbow overdub section that clocks in at only 0:50. "Paseo de Gracia" is listed as a rough mix & almost the same length as the final version. Honestly, it's not that much different. The final bonus track is a rough mix of the opening song "La Sagrada Familia". This version is over a minute shorter than the final version. It lacks the opening narration.
Gaudi is almost certainly the Project's weakest effort. Alan Parsons IS the acknowledged master of the concept album but one would be hard pressed to believe that based on this album. Perhaps basing a concept album on the life of Antonio Gaudi is TOO conceptual, he's not a household name, at least, not around here. This was Woolfson's idea without a doubt. He would later do a Broadway production based on Gaudi.
The album sounds better than ever but you really have to be a die hard fan of the Project to like this one. There's not very many Project fans that I have met that claim Gaudi as their favorite Project album.
