Music Review: where have you been!

So let me get this straight- for the last three years I've been a huge Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever fan, but somehow Al Di Meola's Elegant Gypsy somehow completely slipped under my radar. I have no idea HOW it happened, but it unfortunately did.
My goodness! What a masterpiece!
I'm hearing it for the very first time tonight and I'm totally blown away by Al's beautiful and complex guitar playing skills. Jan Hammer also lights up the experience with a few brilliant solos of his own, such as on the masterpiece suite "Elegant Gypsy Suite". This track also features some really spectacular Santana-like guitar jamming in the way the entire track flows. Would fit in nicely with his Caravanserai album, in fact. That doesn't mean I'm calling Al Di Meola a ripoff of the legendary Santana or anything- nooooo dog on way!
Anyway Al and Jan Hammer team up and blow the joint down with an *incredible* solo in the middle of "Flight Over Rio". I'm not necessarily sure if that's a keyboard or synthesizer that Jan's dazzling the listener with, but it absolutely rules whatever it is.
Meanwhile a song like "Midnight Tango" really reminds me of a Spanish castle located in the middle of nowhere on a breezy summer day. A brilliant piece of guitar work.
Yeah, Elegant Gypsy sounds like a mid 70's album, but I have a feeling the professional complexity that dominates these jazzy jams will hold up and remain completely fresh for many years to come.
