Music reviews of Konvicted

Music Review: Good for a couple of strong singles
Rating: 3 Stars

Akon undoubtedly is the explification of an artist who can from the "nether" regions of the charts and managed to find mainstream success. TROUBLE seemed to come out of nowhere as Akon's debut initially struggled for chart recognition. Eventually the set managed to peak at #18 on the Billboard Charts after all was said and done with a number of hit singles "Locked Up" (Top ten, Hot 100), "Bananza (Belly Dancer)" (Top 40 on the Hot 100), "Ghetto" (R&B/Hip-Hop), Lonely (#4, Hot 100), and "Pot Of Gold" (R&B/Hip-Hop). The album went platinum despite a slow, gradual selling process and set the mood for anything else Akon should release. Akon became one of the most popular collaborators/producers on anything including "Soul Survivor" (Young Jeezy) and most recently "The Sweet Escape", Gwen Stefani's second single from her new album of the same title. Essentially on KONVICTED then, Akon banks on newfound success, though KONVICTED feels much more solid than TROUBLE in a number of ways. It is by no means perfect as there is a couple of songs that drag down the album rather than enhance it, but it is definitely a better balance than the former album.

The album opens up with Akon's gangsta side on the great "Shake Down" where Akon screams: "y'all doned f**ked up now". Despite all its machismo, the production is banging and Akon sounds as good as ever with his inescapable vocals, perhaps his greatest attribute as an artist. Unfortunate is the constant repetition of Akon's mark, "konvict", which is ubiquitous throughout the whole album (and grows annoying soon enough). However, "Shake Down" has an incredibly catchy chorus and like "Locked Up" is an exceptional way to open up the album. "Blown Away" proves to be another straight hit, just as "Trouble Nobody" was on TROUBLE. The track features popular collaborator Styles P and its piano-laced production is top notch. Akon sounds as potent as ever, and he keeps up that potency through the first two singles from KONVICTED, "Smack That" featuring Eminem (#2 Billboard Hot 100), and the #1 hit "I Wanna Love You" featuring Snoop Dogg. Both singles were the perfect choice for the first and second singles from KONVICTED and turned into "cash crops" for AKON during the crowded holiday release season. Production on both are top notch and the collaborations are too, though Akon holds both tracks down himself very well.

A handful of tracks then come along that end up bringing down the momentum that KONVICTED maintained for four straight tracks. Some are better than others, but they don't necessarily allure the same way as "Shake Down", "Blown Away, "Smack That", or "I Wanna Love You". "The Rain" isn't terrible by any means, but from the get-go you can tell that the same inspiration for the first four tracks didn't quite rub off on "The Rain" to give it that extra "zest". The concept of "The Rain" is great, but it doesn't quite deliver the way that it should. Akon then ventures into the adult-contemporary realm with the pretty, yet "missing something" "Never Took The Time". It does show off more vocal skill from Akon for the first time, but there is a certain element that doesn't make "Never Took The Time" feel complete. "Mama Africa" features exceptional production, but doesn't feel like a solid hit, and "I Can't Wait" doesn't quite cut it. The inspiration returns for a couple of solid, solid tracks at the tail-end of KONVICTED.

"Gangsta Bop" proves to be just as strong as "Shake Down", "Smack That", and "I Wanna Love You". You feel like Akon is back in his element with his "clubbier" tracks, even if tracks like "Never Took The Time" or "I Can't Wait" attempt loftier heights than the club. "Tired Of Runnin'" is another genuine Akon gem, even if to a lesser extent than the very best of the best. It features an exceptional choice of sample via "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want To Be Right)". "Once In A While" isn't bad, but it isn't great either, just merely average. The album ends strong enough with "Don't Matter", though the track does feel a bit long and overly repetitive.

Overall, it is an average album with some stunning highlights. It shouldb enough to keep Akon at star-status if nothing more than that. 3 stars.

Description of Konvicted

AKON KONVICTED
If R&B has been drifting lately, Konvicted proves Akon's ready to take the wheel: His reedy voice encapsulates Jersey, Jamaica, and continents beyond (Africa, most notably); his wait-a-beat delivery enhances his high-flying hooks; and his attitude mulches thuggery and womanizing into something worth spreading around. If that's not indication enough he's on a roll, consider the accolades Konvicted is racking up--a Grammy nod for "Smack That" (featuring Eminem), a No. 1 single with "I Wanna Love You" (featuring Snoop Dogg), sales in the millions. To count Akon a musical groundbreaker, though, you have to be ready to embrace a new genre that might take Brian McKnight and Usher fans a little getting used to: hardcore R&B. Both "I Wanna Love You" and "Smack That" don't shy away from raunch, and tracks like "Tired of Runnin'" and "Shake Down" bring on an MC edge that belongs more to the street than to the bedroom. Still, count on Akon to convince holdouts he's worth hearing; both his message and his manner bear the marks of the unstoppable. --Tammy La Gorce
