Music Review: Impeccable but clinical playing

My brother, who is a accomplished guitarist himself, told me that John Williams is THE king of classical guitar. Being so excited by his recommendation, I bought this CD immediately. But having listened to this CD, I had mixed feelings. Williams' playing is technically rock-solid and impeccable, but the machine-like precision of his playing dominates here and many of the pieces sound too clinical and somewhat soul-less. Listen, for example to his cool rendition of El Ultimo Tremolo. It is beautifully and sensitively played, yet it fails to convey the sense of longing and the nostalgic poignancy of the music. If Williams is the king of guitar, the art of guitar playing still has got a long way to go in terms of musicality and tonal expression!
