Music Review: Great fun, lively playing

A review I read in the SF Examiner said that this was "a strong contender for fun piano record of the year", and indeed it is! The selections are in turn kitsch (Ketelbey's descriptive In A Chinese Temple Garden, complete with gong!), mildly avant-garde (John Adams' hypnotic China Gates), or more authentically flavored (Tcherepnin's highly colorful and virtuoso Chinese Concert Etudes). Jenny Lin's tongue in cheek approach and velvety tone fit this imaginative program perfectly, while her poetic insight reveals unsuspected treasures - just listen to Cyril Scott's smoky Lotus Land, or Martinu's dreamy Fifth Day of the Fifth Moon. More importantly, she always finds the appropriate mood for each piece. My favorite is perhaps A la Chinoise by Leo Ornstein, the oldest living composer (now 108!), a crazy work inspired by a walk in San Francisco's Chinatown! The CD lasts 80 minutes, and I enjoyed every second of it.

Description of Chinoiserie

Jenny Lin is a young Taiwanese American pianist with nimble fingers, superb technique, and, judging from this program, the ability to change from the upright of wacky classicism (Rossini) to an eclectic jazz style (Morton Gould). This entire CD is devoted, as the title implies, to Chinese-influenced music by non-Eastern composers; the longest single movement is just over 6 minutes, so the disc's effect is of a series of lovely baubles, each individual, but all connected by a theme. The music of the East has always fascinated Western composers (remember Madama Butterfly?), and it is easy to hear why--with the Chinese pentatonic scale, they can expand their harmonic language. These pieces range from tiny delicacies--the Percy Grainger, for instance--to the hypnotic "China Gates" by John Adams and on to Leo Ornstein's À la Chinoise, which, though incredibly busy, is hypnotic in an entirely different way. This disc is a real treat. --Robert Levine
