Music reviews of Why NotMusic Review: Solid album, cool guitar work-- 3.5 stars
Adam Hole is one of a plethora of young Australian slide guitarists HEAVILY influenced by Jeff Lang (that guy who has an album out with the late Chris Whitley and once recorded with Bob Brozman). Jeff Lang is one of the most amazing acoustic guitarists on the planet, particularly with a slide, and every blues-based guitarist worth his salt in Australia worships him. (Unfortunately, his weakest album is the most common in the U.S.-- Cedar Grove). You may have heard of some of Lang's more famous disciples like John Butler, Xavier Rudd, Ash Grunwald, etc. Adam Hole is a lesser-known guitarist in that vein. Adam Hole's style on this album adheres much more closely to Lang than Lang's other followers, though, and that is the flaw in this album. It is difficult to hear Adam Hole cover Goin' Out West without wondering why he would cover songs that Lang covers in the same style as Lang (he also plays Elvis Is Still Dead on this album). Even his voice shares some characteristics with Jeff's. Of course, Adam Hole is not a slavish imitator, and when he steps out on his own, the results are quite satisfying. There is no bad material on this album, and there are a few standout tracks. Adam Hole is still young, and as he matures, he will continue to step further out of Jeff Lang's rather enormous shadow. In fact, he has already begun to do so. He recently began playing with the Marji Curran Trio (yet another Aussie acoustic blues group), and his playing on their new album, "The River," shows that he now has his own style. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't seem to be selling that wonderful album (yet), but you can find it at other on-line retailers. Adam Hole is a wonderful guitarist who continues to grow. This particular album is good, but not the best showcase for his talents. Still, I find it difficult to imagine that someone who likes Jeff Lang wouldn't find a lot to like about this album.
