Music reviews of Busse Woods

Music Review: Move Over Boys, There's A New Queen In Town!
Rating: 4 Stars

Acid King hails from San Francisco and was put together by Lori S. (wife of Melvin's drummer Dan). This is their first full-length album and was produced by Billy Anderson. This album was released in 1999 and features new bassist Brian Hill, who replaced Dan Southwick (left to join Altamont). Brian comes from a more speed/jazz metal background, and Lori was wearing braces during the recording for this album. How do these conditions affect the album? Here is my review of the songs based out of 5 *****:

"Electric Machine" - Super fuzzy/distorted guitar screeches in as bass and drum then join and drop out. The guitar lays down a slow, viscous melody and Lori's vocals swoop in "Head into another end/ Thought you'd never see it." The tempo is very heavy, slow and chunky. Has a early Sabbath vibe. The drumming by Joey Osbourne is outstanding! The bass is very pronounced and jazzy, not to mention HEAVY! The guitar is as fuzzy as an Ewok! There is an extended jam session as the main theme is repeated and extended and then the chorus is repeated. Lori's vocals are very reminiscent of Joan Jett. This song is a superb piece of doom metal that would make any Sabbath fan smile! Rating - ****

"Silent Circle" - Lori's fuzzed out guitar screams its way in and lays down the theme, then the drum and bass pound their way in. The sound reminds me of Kyuss ala "Blues For the Red Sun". The bass and drum are very heavy and the rhythm solid. Lori's vocals are ethereal and spacey. Lori does have some short, spacey seques but no real guitar solo. There is more extended jamming as the riffage is very heavy and dense. The jam helps to fade out the song. Another fine piece. Rating - ****

"Drive Fast, Take Chances" - Lone guitar (airy/understated) playing the theme and then the drum and bass ROOOOAR in. The tempo is again heavy, chugging and thick. Lori's vocasl are spacey and dreamy. There is another extended band jam. the bass and drums are very pronounced and heavy. Lori's guitar is very distorted and fuzzy. The lyrics are sparse but the riffage is maximum. The tempo slows down slightly for the final phrase as Loris plays a spacy, light solo to end the tune. A very thick and heavy metal gem. Rating - ****

"39 Lashes" - Taken from the "Jesus Christ Superstar" soundtrack and written by Adrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice, the song starts with a lone bass line. Lori's guitar joins in the background and echoes the melody. The drums then pummel their way in as the vocals ring in. The vocals are distorted to sound like a lash as they count their way to 39. The drums have a brief solo and then the bass and guitar rejoin and the song introduction is repeated as the tune closes. A very eerie and moody piece. Rating - ***

"Carve The Five" - Lone bass lays down the melody as drum cymbals echo in the background. Guitar feedback slowly builds volume and muscles its way in. The tempo is slow but very heavy. Guitar echo effects reminds my of Robin Trower ala "Bridge of Sighs". The vocals are again light/ethereal/spacey. The bass and guitar are very thick and fuzzy. Another extended jam and then the main chorus is repeated as the song returns to its opening structure. Rating - ***1/2

"Busse Woods" - The titular track is an instrumental that starts with a lone guiatr playing jagged chords. The guitar sound gets layered as a high pitched chord hovers over the theme and then crashes when the drum and bass bash their way in. There is some real fine drumming on display by Joey Osbourne. the tempo is very thick and heavy and repeating. A fine instrumental. Rating - ***

The bands name comes from the book "Say You Love Satan" that was about a boy named Ricky Kasso who was deemed the "Acid King" by his peers. The boy was made infamous for murdering his friend and then hanging kimself while incarcerated (a true story). The band would tour the states with Altamont in support of this album. Brian Hill left after the tour and a new bass player hunt was begun. This release has two bonus tracks which are covers of "Motorhead" by Hawkwind and "Not Fragile" by BTO. The covers are very well done and are a nice addition to the release. This was a fine full length debut and well worth the purchase. While Lori's vocals are very Joan Jett in sound, but they are airey and well sung. Think of Joan Jett singing early Sabbath/Kyuss/Sleep while tripping. Buy this if still available.
