Music Review: The Academy Is - "So show me something we haven't heard yet."
Rating: 2 Stars

The Academy Is
Almost Here

2005 was a wonderful year for music, so far we've had a variety of unique band bringing a different a sound to the world of indie-music from The New Pornographer's Twin Cinema to Sufjan Steven's Illinois, but a plethora of albums from this year scream the opposite such as The Academy Is's Almost Here. A perfect comment for their new album is stolen straight from their song Season, "So show me something we haven't heard yet." American Music is being overtaken by a pop-punk storm. Pop Punk in its basic idea is not bad, but with pop punk comes a stockpile of bands that sound all the same. With a storm of Simple Plan shirts and a profusion of warped tour attendance, I find myself becoming annoyed with the praise that some of these mostly mediocre bands are getting. Nowadays, most pop punk bands sound the same with very unexceptional talent and lacking lyrically. These lyrics are playing the fans. If you don't pay close enough attention, you may walk away after listening to Falloutboy's From Under the Cork Tree thinking it was really emotionally ripping, but rather most pop punk bands like to connect themselves with Emo are playing of its' somewhat popularity and incorporating some of it's sound and terribly mimicking its' lyrics. Don't get me wrong there are some fantastic pop punk bands out there. One of my favorites is The Honorary Title, but this genre has a majority of bands that sound extremely similar to each other.

Almost Here isn't technically "bad", but rather extremely mediocre. It contains no special or unique to it. Frankly, I found this album very annoying from the cheesy lyrics to the extremely simple guitar riffs. When I listen to music, I tend to focus on the rhythm section, and find it much harder to find a guitarist I like unlike the abundance of favorite drummers I have. The Academy Is's drummer is nothing special, again, like most pop-punk band's the drumming in Almost Here is very simple, and is nothing compared to real punk drummers. Also, most of the songs on this album sound relatively similar. Another annoying thing is that The Academy Is can't decide whether they want to continue with a hard/emo sound or whine lyrics about teenage love. It's just a flashback to The Used, which is a terrible child of both a harder sound that can change into a really annoying whine of terrible lyrics.

Which brings me to lyrics, like most pop punk bands in the 21 century, are about teenage love and breakups. When The Academy is not whining about lost love, there are combining the overplayed emotion of Emo in their incredibly awful lyrics. This is an excerpt from Absolution
case is closed, you're back into focus
the jury's out, you're closing in
this battle of mind over matters spent
this scar, this scar is not permanent
choices or chances, or what sinks in water
your secret's out, what you held within
you've found your plague, your cancer, stop
i bet you've got something clever
this house is caving in
your last words, caught trembling
decisions, make decisions for your fate
your choice is the chance that you have to take
burn, stop, your time is up
you've found all of the answers
so take a breath and end this chapter
i'll bring the fire if you bring the water
face to the grave, will the hero be saved

You can see the combination of Emo lyrics into light punk, but I guess the connection isn't that ridiculous, seeing as Emo was greatly influenced by punk, but Emo is artistic with deep lyrics, where as these lyrics seem generic and lacking, almost as if The Academy is stole "Emo Lyrics" and made them cheap.

Almost Here is not worth the money, unless you're looking for a extremely generic band with lacking musical talent and mangled emotional lyrics. If you're looking for a better pop punk album of the new age, I recommend Anything Else But The Truth by The Honorary Title.
