Music reviews of Another Earthquake!

Music Review: Got tremendous potenial, but so far ive only seen glimpes... (the last track)
Rating: 3 Stars

A friend of mine lent this record to me (she was and still is a big fan of this guy), and I listened to it, thinking that this guy would either would be a wannabe rapper, or a backstreet boy copycat. Surprisingly, I was right on both accounts. Aaron tries to rap, and fails miserably, I'm not going to lie here, he's bloody rubbish. If he aspires to be another Eminem, then he should stop now, and consider another career. If he's trying to be a copy of his brother (who I think is part of the Backstreet Boys themselves) then someone pat him on the back and tell him that he's done it. Because, except for a couple of songs, which I will mention in a mo, this album is comprised of the teenage boy-band/American kid music that 10 year old girls like. And they don't even like the music that much; they just think he's good looking... So if you're a 10 year old girl who likes the singers who are all looks and no talent, then Aaron Carter's album is the one for you. Except, the whole album isn't like that... Coming back to what I said earlier, there are a couple of songs that show what this kid could achieve. "Do You Remember" is, to be honest, rather cheesy and reminds me of Boyzone, or indeed, the Backstreet Boys. However, it shows that he can actually sing well, or at least he will be able to once his voice has fully broken. I think now he's about 17, so we can assume that his voice had indeed properly broken, and that it will be refined for future albums. However, we needn't wait until the next album, because there are two songs on the second half of the album which are, quite literally outstanding. "When It Comes To You" is a lively upbeat song, and Aaron's vocals on this are really something! He has matured, and it sounds less strained at the high or loud notes like on "Do You Remember". There are some faults though - the lyrics are a little cheesy in places, and parts of the backing vocals are slightly cheesy. Catchy, I'll admit, but cheesy. However, the music (as in the riffs and solos) is really well thought out, and really makes this song sound good - whether this is Aaron's doing or not, I don't know (Somehow I suspect that he didn't write it, but hey! You never know...). The reason I mention the music here is because in the only other songs worth listening to, the music is very typical boy-band stuff - start in a key, move into the dominant and subdominant every now and then, if you're lucky you might get the second in there, and probably the relative minor. The bridge is usually in the relative minor, or maybe the relative minor of the dominant, if you're really lucky. There are no diminished 7th's, barely any key changes, although if there are, it's usually into the dominant or relative minor. So, the key changes and chords are pretty damn simple. (All you musicians out there should be following this well, and all you non-musicians, basically what I'm saying is that the keys of the music in typical boy-band stuff; so most of Aaron's music are very simple, making it an easy song to sing, and sing along to.) But, in "When It Comes To You", the music is more complex, making it sound better and more sophisticated, ultimately making Aaron sound more mature. That's why I think it's worth mentioning, because amongst all the "rapping" nonsense, there is a good singer buried underneath. And his talent is unmistakably shown in the last song (excluding the hidden tracks) - "Keep Believing". I astounded myself by loving this song, even though it's a pop ballad, and I like listening to rock and heavy metal, with some indie thrown in. The thing that blew me away with this song was the raw emotion in Aaron's voice; it didn't sound fabricated in any way - and what's more, the lyrics, coming from a 14 year old (he was that age when this came out, right?) are PHENOMENAL. There's no other way of describing it, honestly, this kid delivers the song in a way that is designed to make you cry, and boy, I can imagine it would work very well. If the songs on his next album are, at the very least, the standard of "Keep Believing", then I'll buy it. And for me, that is a complete and utter no-no most of the time - I don't do pop. But honestly, with a little vocal training, and a real, mature attitude to the music, Aaron Carter could be absolutely mind-blowing. Unlike some people I know, I don't really care that he's an American teenage kid, as long as the music he produces is good, I don't see any reason why I wouldn't buy it. Unfortunately, the chances that he would read and take heed of the comments here are rather slim, "rather" being a huge understatement... But honestly folks, IF Aaron Carter gets his act together, he COULD be producing some fantastic music - personally, I think "Keep Believing" is probably the best song he's ever made.
So, to summarise, as I said earlier, if you're a 10 year old girl who doesn't give a crap about the music and just wants to get this `cos you fancy the bloke on the front of the cover, then go ahead, buy it. However, if you like really good quality music, and I don't just mean the stuff that I like (rock, heavy metal and indie), I mean good music, regardless of the genre, then you should get a copy off a mate, and rip "Do you Remember", "When It Comes To You" and DEFINITELY "Keep Believing" onto your computer. You'll probably enjoy the second two; you might the first one a bit iffy. Also, while you're at it, download "Saturday Night" by Aaron off the `net, cos you'll probably like that one too. If you like the Backstreet Boys, then buy this, you'll probably like it.

Description of Another Earthquake!

Another Earthquake! by Carter, Aaron

This product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

Yes, Aaron Carter's voice has cracked on his third album, but that's not the whole story here. Another Earthquake finds the teen-pop star shedding the simple melodies of his previous releases in favor of a more grownup sound that's informed equally by Nelly's insistent rap grooves ("My First Ride") and Limp Bizkit's infectious new-metal riffs ("Another Earthquake"). Carter has come a long way from the puerile "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)," but his childlike charm remains firmly intact on joyous amusement-park anthems like "2 Good 2 B True" and "America A O." --Jaan Uhelszki
